Seven-Figure Into Mischief Colts Lead Day One of OBS March Sale

The 2022 OBS March Sale kicked off with a pair of seven-figure colts by OBS March graduate Into Mischief leading the first session.

  • Hip 257 summoned $1,100,000 from Hideyuki Mori. The bay colt by Into Mischief is out of the Not For Love mare Zapara and a half to stakes-placed Basso. He worked a bullet furlong in 9 4/5 and is consigned to the sale by Eddie Woods as agent.
  • Hip 277, another bay colt by Into Mischief is out of multiple Grade 1 winner, Artemis Agrotera, by Roman Ruler. He had a 10 1/5 eighth-mile work and goes to the partnership of Spendthrift, BSW/Crow Colts Group, Broman’s for $1,000,000 from the Sequel Bloodstock consignment as agent for Chester & Mary Broman.

The market was buoyant and supported by a varied selection of six-figure juveniles, strongly represented by first-season sires.

  • Hip 93, a chestnut colt by Gun Runner out of Sacre Coeur, by Saint Ballado, brought $600,000 from Fawzi Abdulla Nass. A half to champion Lady Eli, he worked a quarter in 21 3/5 and is consigned by Eddie Woods as agent.
  • Hip 291, a bay colt by freshman sire Bolt d’Oro out of the Uncle Mo mare, Beautissimo, herself a half to graded stakes placed stakes winner Two Thirty Five also brought $600,000. After breezing a co-fastest 9 4/5 eighth, He goes to K S I from the Top Line Sales LLC, Agent consignment.
  • Hip 190 is a dark bay/brown colt by fellow freshman sire Cloud Computing out of the Montbrook mare, Tara Brooch, a half to stakes winner Al Max Diner. After a furlong work in 9 4/5, he goes to West Point / Talla Racing, LEB, Agent for 560,000 from the Paul Sharp, Agent consignment.
  • Hip 125, a dark bay/brown filly by another first-year sire, Mendelssohn, fetched $525,000 from Gracie Bloodstock as agent after a 10 flat eight-mile performance. Out of the Candy Ride (ARG) mare Simply Confection, the filly is a half to newly-minted graded stakes winner and Kentucky Derby hopeful, Simplification.
  • Hip 44, a bay Malibu Moon filly out of the Smart Strike mare, Private Jet who is a full sister to champion Lookin at Lucky, goes to Katsumi Yoshida for $450,000. She is consigned by Top Line Sales LLC as agent. She went 9 4/5 in her furlong breeze.
  • Hip 82, a chestnut colt by freshman sire, Good Magic out of Rose Mine, by Street Cry (IRE) went a furlong in 9 4/5 and goes to Maverick Racing for $450,000 from the Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent consignment. He hails from the family of champion Escena.
  • Hip 46, a dark bay/brown filly by Upstart out of the Simon Pure mare, Pure Legacy, a half to champion Areumdaundonghaeng. The filly had a 10 flat eighth-mile work and she goes to Lael Stable for $425,000 from the de Meric Sales consignment as agent.
  • Hip 213, a bay Adios Charlie filly out of Travelator, by A. P Jet, worked a bullet quarter in 20 2/5. She is a half to new stakes winner Hollywood Jet and goes to West Point / Talla Racing, LEB, Agent for $410,000. She is consigned by Ocala Stud as agent.

Total figures for the first day of selling include:

  • 188 horses changed hands compared to 175 in the first session of last year’s March Sale.
  • Gross sales of $26,325,000 compared for $19,125,000 in 2021 for a 37.6% year-to-year increase.
  • Average price was $140,027 compared to $109,289 last year for a 28.1% increase.
  • Median price was $77,500 this year and $55,000 in 2021, a 40.9% increase.
  • The buyback rate was 16.8% compared to 13.8% last year for a 3% increase.

 

The March Sale continues Wednesday, March 16 at 10:30am with hips 371 – 635 slated to visit the OBS sales ring.

2022 OBS March Sale Under Tack Show Concludes

On the final day of a weather-delayed breeze show, the workouts were uninterrupted to wrap up the 2022 OBS March Under Tack show.

Three horses shared the co-fastest quarter-mile work of 20 4/5:

  • Series Star, hip 446, a dark bay/brown Violence colt out of graded stakes winner Freedom Star, by Street Cry (IRE), is consigned to the sale by Eddie Woods as agent.
  • Hip 456 is a bay colt by first-season sire Awesome Slew out of the Into Mischief mare, Genau. From the family of graded stakes winning millionaire and OBS March grad Western Pride, he is consigned to the sale by Ocala Stud.
  • Hip 521, a bay colt by Into Mischief consigned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds as agent, is out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Jellicle Song, herself out of the Grade 1 winning millionaire, Precious Kitten.

Five horses shared the second fastest quarter time of 21 flat:

  • Hip 461, a gray/roan Frosted colt consigned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds as agent is out of Ginza, a full to multimillionaire, Breeders’ Cup winner and OBS graduate Stephanie’s Kitten.
  • Hip 530 is a bay Practical Joke colt out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare, Juliette Ava, herself a half to Grade 1 winner, Siphonic. He is consigned by Eddie Woods as agent.
  • Hip 542, a bay Medaglia d’Oro colt, is out of graded stakes placed stakes winner, Kelly’s Humor, by Midnight Lute. He is also consigned by Eddie Woods as agent.
  • Hip 548, a bay colt by West Coast out of Kimono, by Flatter, is a half to stakes winner Keke Kimono. He is again consigned by Eddie Woods as agent.
  • Hip 604, a bay colt by Speightster is out of Manitou Moon, by Shanghai Bobby. The mare is a half-sister to stakes winner Fierce Lady and the colt is consigned by Pick View as agent.

 

Six horses tied for the fastest furlong in 9 4/5:

  • Hip 437, Mor Speed, a chestnut colt by freshman sire Mor Spirit was the first to break the 10-second barrier today. He is out of the winning Indian Charlie mare, Follow My Tail, a daughter of group stakes winner Freefourracing.
  • Hip 438, a dark bay/brown Bolt d’Oro colt consigned by Top Line Sales LLC as agent, is out of Foolish Cause, by Giant’s Causeway, herself a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire Get Stormy. The colt is a half to stakes winner Foolish Humor.
  • Hip 534, a chestnut filly by Midshipman out of the Tapit mare Kalistoga Girl, who is out of stakes winner Calendar Girl. She is consigned to the sale by Cruzin’ Thoroughbreds as agent.
  • Hip 544, a chestnut Shackleford filly out of Key Is to Win, by Dixie Union, is closely related to graded stakes winner Tiz the Bomb from the consignment of Longoria Training & Sales as agent.
  • Hip 545 consigned by Hawk’s Rest LLC, is a dark bay/brown Uncaptured colt out of Keyvacious, by Teuflesberg, making the mare a half to dual-champion Deland.
  • Hip 631, a chestnut colt by Goldencents consigned by Jose Munoz, is out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Ms Hallie and from the family of Grade 1 winner and OBS grad In Summation.

 

The OBS March Sale begins Tuesday, March 15 at 1pm with hips 1 – 316. The sale continues Wednesday, March 16 at 10:30am with hips 317 – 635.

William Branch’s Carotari took the lead going to the turn in the $100,000 Janus Stakes and kept it to the wire, opening daylight after turning for home and cruising to victory by a length and three quarters. It’s the fifth stakes win for the 6-year-old graded stakes placed gelding by Artie Schiller, trained by Brian Lynch, now 24-8-6-3 with $556,863 in earnings. Madaket Stables LLC, Wonder Stables, Tony Weintraub and Tony and Brandon M. Dalinka’s Miss J McKay, fanned wide after circling horses on the turn in the $100,000 Abundantia Stakes, charged to the front a sixteenth from home and scored by a length and a half. Winngate Stables LLC’s Kathleen O is two for two and a stakes winner after overcoming a slow start and early traffic trouble to lead a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $100,000 Cash Run Stakes. The newly turned 3-year-old daughter of Upstart circled the leaders on the turn, took command after straightening away and drew off in the stretch to score by 8-1/2 lengths. Mi Negrita (June ’21) settled for second and Fast and Flirty (April ’21) checked in third. Trained by Shug McGaughey, the two time OBS graduate has earned $104,760 to date. Lea Farms, LLC’s Lightening Larry took the lead at the start of the $100,000 Limehouse Stakes, opened it up on the turn and held on gamely to win by half a length. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Uncaptured, sold for $50,000 by Pick View LLC, Agent, at the 2021 March Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. Gary Barber’s Bron and Brow ended his juvenile campaign in style, breaking his maiden with his first stakes win and heading a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $102,529 Louisiana Futurity on New Year’s Eve.  The now 3-year-old colt by Gormley chased fellow OBS graduate Charco (January ’20) early, took command coming to the quarter pole and drew away in the stretch to best him by 2-3/4 lengths, with Big Scully (October ’20) checking in third. M Bar O LLC’s Elle Z set the pace under pressure in the early going of the $75,000 Nelson J. Menard Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds on New Year’s Day, drew clear after turning for home and cruised to a five length victory. That’s three stakes wins for the 5-year-old daughter of City Zip, trained by Chris Hartman, now 16-7-3-0 with $355,283 earnings. Oak Tree Stables LLC’s Strummer pressed the pace in the $70,000 Lookout Stakes on New Year’s Eve at Delta Downs, took charge in the lane and scored by three lengths. It’s the fourth straight win and first stakes victory for the 4-year-old filly by Star Guitar, purchased for $22,000 out of the Golden Rock Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2020 OBS June Sale. An OBS grad scored a holiday weekend victory in Australia.

LNJ Foxwoods’ Lighthouse posted her fourth straight win on New Year’s Day, taking the $160,000 Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington Racecourse in Australia. It’s the first Australian stakes win for the 5-year-old graded stakes placed daughter of Mizzen Mast, winner of the Music City Stakes at Kentucky Downs in 2020. At the 2019 OBS April Sale, she breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before she was purchased for $375,000 out of the Randy Miles consignment. Hronis Racing LLC’s Edgeway was a wire to wire winner of the $77,028 Kalookan Queen Stakes, scoring by a length and three quarters over fellow OBS graduate Merneith (March ’19).  It’s the third stakes win for the 5-year-old daughter of Competitive Edge, sold for $275,000 by Mayberry Farm, Agent, at the 2019 OBS April Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Three OBS graduates scored stakes wins at Prairie Meadows.

Three Diamonds Farm’s Army Wife rallied four-wide on the turn in Friday’s $225,000 Iowa Oaks (G3), took the lead after straightening out in the stretch, and eased away late to score by 3-3/4 lengths. That’s two straight graded stakes victories for the 3-year-old daughter of Declaration of War, now 9-4-1-2 with $423,972 in earnings for trainer Mike Maker. It’s the first stakes score for the 4-year-old daughter of Race Day, trained by Brad Cox, now 14-4-4-2 with earnings of $266,867. A trio of OBS grads scored on Sunday at Pimlico.

William & Corinne Heiligbrodt’s Yaupon stalked the pacesetter in the $100,000 Lite the Fuse Stakes, took the lead inside the final furlong and eased away to win by a length and three quarters. It’s the third stakes victory for the 4-year-old graded stakes winning colt by Uncle Mo, now 7-5-0-0 with $383,264 in earnings for trainer Steve Asmussen. He breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before he was purchased by East Hickman Bloodstock for $255,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2019 OBS June Sale. watch his under tack video

Ruggeri Stable, Richard Coburn, Script R Farm and Michael Miceli’s Mrs. Orb picked up her second stakes win of the year in the $100,000 Caesar’s Wish Stakes, rallying wide into the stretch and getting up late to score by a half a length. The 6-year-old daughter of Orb, trained by co-owner Michael Miceli, is now 25-7-8-4 and has earned $523,520. She worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 4/5 before she was purchased for $30,000 out of the Classic Bloodstock consignment at the 2017 OBS June Sale.  watch her under tack video

Dark Hollow Farm’s Ellanation rated off the pace in the $75,000 Jameela Stakes, rallied outside down the stretch and was up in time to score by half a length. It’s the first stakes win for the 5-year-old daughter of Alternation, purchased for $160,000 out of the Costanzo Sales consignment at the 2018 OBS April Sale after an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Eric Fein’s Original took the lead at the start of the $100,000 Manila Stakes on Sunday at Belmont Park, opened daylight into the stretch then held off a late charge to score by a head. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old graded stakes placed son of Quality Road, purchased for $425,000 out of the de Meric Sales consignment at the 2020 OBS Spring Sale after speeding an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5.
