Nothing Like You scores in Los Alamitos’ Starlet Stakes

Georgia Antley Hunt, Jeff Giglio and John L. Rogitz’s Nothing Like You (Malibu Moon – Miss Derek) dueled for the lead early in Saturday’s $200,500 Starlet Stakes (G2) as Los Alamitos, shook loose on the turn and drew off in the stretch to score by 5-1/4 lengths. It’s the second straight stakes victory for the 2-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon, trained by Bob Baffert, now 6-3-1-0 with $237,160 in earnings. KEM Stables’ Hot Fudge (Liam’s Map – Nelle’s Mischief) stalked the leaders three-wide in the $120,000 Garland of Roses Stakes at Aqueduct, took over a sixteenth out then held off a late charge to win by a neck. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old filly by Liam’s Map, consigned to the 2021 OBS Spring Sale by Flying Fish, Agent, and sold for $235,000 after breezing an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. Now 11-6-1-1 for trainer Linda Rice, she has earned $356,405 to date. watch her under tack video

Whispering Oaks Farm LLC’s Good and Stout (Coal Front – Ready Witted) saved ground early in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes, split horses to take over in the stretch then held off a late run to be best by a nose. Fellow OBS Spring Sale graduate Sounds Like Power (Power Jam – Street Sounds) closed to finish third. It’s the first stakes win for the 2-year-old son of Coal Front, trained by Carrol Castille, now 5-2-1-1 with $101,000 in earnings. March Sale catalog now online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2022 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com.

A total of 635 juveniles have been cataloged for the two-day sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15th and 16th, with both sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m.  Hips 1 – 316 will sell on Tuesday: Hips 317 – 635 on Wednesday. The Under Tack Show will span three days, beginning Thursday, March 10th with Hips 1 – 212. Hips 213 – 424 will breeze Friday, March 11th and Hips 425 – 635 will go Saturday, March 12th. All three sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the TDN, DRF and Blood-Horse, and Past The Wire websites.

Both sides of the catalog pay tribute to half a dozen of the champions produced throughout the March sale’s rich history.

Lost in the Fog, consigned to the 2004 Sale by Southern Chase Farm, (Greg and Karen Dodd), won his first ten starts including the King’s Bishop (G1) and Riva Ridge (G2) en route to the Eclipse Award as 2005 Sprint Champion.

Fleet Indian, voted 2006’s champion Older Female, was sold for $230,000 by Leprechaun Racing, Agent, at the 2003 March Sale.  She would go on to earn over $1.7-million and captured five graded stakes including the Personal Ensign (G1) and Beldame (G1).

Midnight Lute, consigned by Eddie Woods to the 2005 March Sale, went on to win over $2.6-million including back to back renewals of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) and an Eclipse Award as 2007 Sprint Champion.

A pair of March grads won Eclipse Awards in 2008. Forever Together, sold for $240,000 in 2006 by Racehorse Consignment, Agent, went on to earn just under $3-million, with six graded stakes wins including the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) and was 2008 champion Grass Female.

Stardom Bound, the 2008 champion 2-Year-Old Filly, was sold at the 2008 March Sale by Shadybrook Farm, Agent, for $375,000. She earned $1,861,610 and won the Del Mar Debutante (G1), Oak Leaf (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Asia Express was the Japanese 2-year-old champion colt in 2013. The multiple graded stakes winner was purchased by Narvick International for $230,000 from breeder Ocala Stud at the 2013 OBS March Sale and went on to earn over $1.6-million, taking the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (G1) at two and Leopard Stakes (G3) at three.

OBS March graduates have continued to uphold the sale’s legacy as a prime source of top class racehorses. The latest star to emerge from the March Sale is Peter L. Cantrell’s Call Me Midnight, who jumped firmly onto the Derby Trail by taking the recent Lecomte Stakes G3) at the Fair Grounds. Trained by Keith Desormeaux, the 3-year-old son of champion OBS March graduate Midnight Lute is now 7-2-1-0 with earnings of $221,806. Sold first by Beth Bayer, Agent, at the 2020 October Select Yearling Sale, he turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 and was purchased for $80,000 out of the Navas Equine consignment at the 2021 March Sale. watch his under tack video     March Sale walking video

Baoma Corporation’s Eda wrapped up her juvenile campaign with three straight stakes wins, the last in the Starlet Stakes (G1) at Los Alamitos in December. Now training at Santa Anita, the daughter of Munnings won four of six starts and earned $370,000. Racing in Japan, Koichi Nishikawa’s Cafe Pharoah compiled an impressive record including victories in the February (G1) and Sirius Stakes (G3), leaving him with a 10-5-0-0 record and earnings of $1,928,283. The 4-year-old colt by American Pharoah, trained by Noriyuki Hori, was consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, to the 2019 OBS March Sale, and was sold for $475,000 to Narvick International, Agent, after turning in an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5. watch his under tack video

Not This Time, Valiant Minister colts fastest at Spring Sale’s fifth Under Tack session

Colts by Not This Time and Valiant Minister breezed quarters in :20 3/5 to share honors for the fastest work at the distance at the fifth session of the Under Tack Show for Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2021 Spring Sale of Two Year Olds in Training.

  • Hip No. 925, consigned by Pick View LLC, Agent, is a bay colt by Not This Time out of stakes winner In a Jif, by Saintly Look, from the family of graded stakes winner Chin High.
  • Hip No. 996, a gray or roan colt by Valiant Minister consigned by S G V Thoroughbreds LLC (Steven Venosa), Agent, is out of La Nonna, by Unbridled’s Song, from the family of champion Apelia.

Five horses worked quarters in :21 flat.

  • Hip No. 840, a dark bay or brown colt by Medaglia d’Oro consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, is a half brother to stakes placed Tapped out of graded stakes winner Gemswick Park, by Speightstown.
  • Hip No. 952, consigned by Pick View LLC, Agent, is a dark bay or brown filly by Frosted out of Jeanne’s Speight, by Speightstown, a full sister to stakes winner Going to Kukaro.

Gio Ponti colt tops Fall Mixed Sale’s Racing Age Section

Hip No. 478, a 2-year-old son of Gio Ponti consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, went to Conquest Stables LLC for $250,000 to top the Horses of Racing Age Section of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2015 Fall Mixed Sale. The unraced dark bay  or brown colt, who breezed three eighths in :33 flat at the Under Tack Show, is out of Groovitude, by Dixie Union, a half sister to graded stakes winner Easter Gift.

Hip No. 508, Hardcore, a maiden 3-year-old daughter of Hard Spun consigned by Crying Crooner Bloodstock was purchased by Preferred Equine, Agent, for $42,000. The bay filly, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Mountain Range, is out of Proper Form, by Deputy Minister.

Hip No. 551, an unraced 2-year-old son of Bellamy Road consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, was sold to Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, for $37,000. The chestnut colt, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5, is out of stakes placed Bafferta, by In Excess (IRE).  

Hip No. 517, Sunshine Life, a maiden 2-year-old filly by Daaher went to Bernell Rhone for $30,000. Consigned by Crying Crooner Bloodstock, the bay filly is out of Samut (IRE), by Danehill, and is a half sister to stakes winner Iuturna.

Hip No. 502, Jazz Player, a 4-year-old chestnut gelding by Malibu Moon consigned by Classic Bloodstock (Danzel Brendemuehl), Agent, was sold to Gary Contessa, Agent, for $29,000. Out of Partyship, by Premiership, the half brother to graded stakes placed stakes winner Barrier Reef worked the Under Tack Show’s co-fastest three eighths, stopping the timer in :32 4/5.

Hip No. 484, an unraced 2-year-old son of Trappe Shot whose quarter in :21 flat was the Under Tack Show’s fastest at the distance, was purchased by CMA Land Co. for $27,000. Consigned by TdM Sales (Tristan & Valery de Meric), Agent, the dark bay or brown colt is out of Kelley’s Dancer, by Forest Grove, a half sister to stakes winner D’wild Ride. 

For the Racing Age Section, 54 horses brought a total of $769,100 compared with 51 horses selling for a total of $1,316,500 last year. The average price was $14,243 compared with $25,814 a year ago while the median was $6,000 compared with $11,500 in 2014. The buyback percentage was 26%, identical to last year.

Hip No. 299, Hangover Saturday, a 3-year-old stakes winning daughter of Pomeroy in foal to Big Drama, topped the Open session, going to Angela Ingenito for $45,000. Consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, she’s out of Margarita Friday, by Johannesburg, from the family of champion Housebuster.

Hip No. 361, Bountempo, a 12-year-old mare by Cape Town in foal to Handsome Mike, was sold to Mersad Metanovic Bloodstock for $30,000. The stakes winning gray or roan mare, also consigned by Summerfield, is out of Rosekris, by Kris S., a half sister to champion Benburb, and is the dam of current 2-year-old Cash Bonus, a winner of three of races including the El Joven Stakes on October 3rd.

Summerfield also consigned Hip No. 414, a weanling son of Soldat sold to Other Things LLC for $22,000. The bay colt is out of stakes placed Winsockie, by Trippi, from the family of stakes winning stakes producer Vany.

For the Open session, 151 horses brought a total of $806,700, compared with 126 selling for a total of $617,600 in 2014.  The average was $5,342, up from $4,902 a year ago, median price was $4,200 compared with $2,850 last year. The buyback percentage was 24.1%; it was 30.4% a year ago.

At Tuesday’s Consignor Preferred session, 113 horses sold for a total of 1,690,700, compared with 138 horses selling for a total of $2,297,900 at last year’s session. The average was $14,962 compared with $16,651 in 2014 while the median price rose to $9,000 from $8,750 last year. The buyback percentage was 32.3%; it was 29.9% a year ago.

Next on the OBS calendar is the OBS Championship Stakes, set for Tuesday, January 26th, 2016. The Winter Mixed Sale & Horses of Racing Age Section is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, January 27th – 28th. The Under Tack Show is set for Monday, January 25th at 10:00 a.m.

Avanzare regresa y se lleva el Del Mar Handicap de Una Milla

Avanzare, de Donato Lanni y John F. Youngblood, ídolo desde su triunfo en el premio Santa Anita’s Arcadia Stakes (G2)  en enero, regresó llevándose el domingo el premio de $201,250 de Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2). El gran capón de 5 años de edad inicio bastante lejos pero en la curva se metió por entre los caballos, arrancó a correr más rápido  en la recta  y se levantó en las yardas finales hasta ganar su clásico de tercer grado por medio cuerpo. Después de trabajar un cuarto en: 21 3/5 en el show de briseo,  el ejemplar fue comprado por Lanni y Youngblood por $52,000 al consignador The Cutting Edge Equine en las ventas de junio de 2012 de la OBS. Entrenado por Tom Proctor, y su record es ahora 13-7-3-2 y ha ganado $505,180 a la fecha.  Vea el video de su briseo aquí.

La OBS instaurará un Repositorio en el 2016

La compañía Ocala Breeders’ Sales anunció que establecerá  el uso de un repositorio  en todas sus subastas a partir de las Ventas Mixtas de invierno en Enero del 2016. El repositorio reemplazará la póliza de garantía acostumbrada la cual sigue vigente para las próximas ventas de potros de un año y Mixtas de Otoño de la OBS.

El uso del Repositorio será voluntario para consignadores y busca proporcionar más información a los compradores para fundamentar sus compras.

“La evolución del Mercado ha hecho que el uso de un repositorio sea un soporte en las ventas de purasangres”, dijo el director de ventas de la OBS, Tod Wojciechowski. “Cualquier cosa que podamos hacer para infundir confianza en el proceso de las subastas será positivo. Anticipamos una amplia participación de compradores y consignadores.”

El mayor consignador y miembro del consejo de la OBS, Eddie Woods, se alegró con esta noticia. “Esta medida nos pone en línea con las otras grandes casas de subastas de purasangres en el país, Dijo.  “El repositorio mejorará la transparencia, y una información más  fiable antes de la subasta dará lugar a una mayor satisfacción después de que el caballo pase por el ring.”

Las ventas de Agosto de Potros de un año empiezan el martes 25 de agosto a las 11:00 a.m. El catálogo está disponible en el sitio web de la OBS obssales.com. Fotos de la conformación de los potros selectos podrán ser vistas por la Lista Maestra Clasificable (Sortable Master Index).
