Prisoner scores in debut as racing returns to Belmont Park

Repole Stable’ Prisoner battled head and head for the lead in the early going of a $64,000 five furlong maiden special test as racing returned to Belmont Park. Taking command after straightening away in the stretch, the 2-year-old colt by Violence drew away in the final sixteenth and scored by 4-3/4 lengths in his racing debut. Consigned to the 2020 OBS March Sale by S G V Thoroughbreds LLC (Steven Venosa), Agent, he was sold to  West Bloodstock, Agent for Repole Stable, Inc. for $175,000 after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Spring Sale’s Under Tack Show begins Sunday, May 31

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s rescheduled 2020 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Sunday, May 31st, and continues through Saturday, June 6th. All seven sessions begin at 7:30 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-176 plus supplements 1233-1244 will breeze on Sunday. Hip No.’s 177-352 and supplements 1245-1256 go to the track Monday; Hip No’s 353-528 plus supplements 1257-1267 breeze Tuesday; Hip No’s 529-704 and supplements 1268-1278 work Wednesday, Hip No.’s 705-880 plus supplements 1279-1289 breeze Thursday, Hip No’s 881-1056 and supplements 1290-1300 work on Friday and Hip No’s 1057-1231 plus supplements 1301-1315 will go to the track Saturday.

The Sale, postponed since its original April dates, is now set for Tuesday, June 9th through Friday, June 12th with each session beginning at 10:00 a.m. For the first time, online bidding will be available. Starship Jubilee named Canada’s Horse of the Year

Blue Heaven Farm’s two-time OBS graduate Starship Jubilee was named Canada’s Horse of the Year and champion female turf horse at the 45th annual Sovereign Awards ceremony. Never off the board in seven starts in 2019, the now 7-year-old daughter of Indy Wind posted four stakes wins, three in graded stakes company. She took the Woodford Reserve Ballston Spa Stakes (G2) at Saratoga in August, the Canadian Stakes (G2) at Woodbine in September and came right back a month later to score in Woodbine’s E. P. Taylor Stakes (G1). She’s off to a good start in 2020, winning all three starts including the Suwanee River (G3) at Gulfstream and the Hillsborough (2) at Tampa Bay Downs. Trained by Kevin Attard, she has compiled a 35-17-5-3-career record and earned $1,498,667 to date.

At her first visit to OBS, she was purchased for $6,500 by Laurence F. Leavy out of The Acorn consignment at the 2014 August Yearling Sale. Tonalist’s Shape takes Gulfstream’s Hollywood Wildcat Stakes

Slam Dunk Racing, Doug Branham and Legacy Ranch Inc.’s Tonalist’s Shape sat just off the early pace in Friday’s $75,000 Hollywood Wildcat Stakes at Gulfstream, took command on the turn for home and drew away down the stretch to score by 3-3/4 lengths over fellow OBS graduate Dream Marie (March ’19). It’s the fourth stakes victory for the graded stakes winning 3-year-old filly by Tonalist, now 7-6-0-0 for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. with $357,425 in earnings. The Supplemental catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 Spring Sale of Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is now online via the OBS website at obssales.com.

Seventy eight horses have been supplemented to the four-day sale, scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, June 9th – June 12th. The horses are distributed equally for the under tack shows and the sale and will be offered at the end of each originally scheduled session as follows:

Allied Racing Stable, LLC’s By My Standards is the newest OBS millionaire after chasing front running Warrior’s Charge to the top of the stretch in the $600,000 Oaklawn Handicap (G2) on Saturday at Oaklawn Park, collaring him coming to the eighth pole and easing away late to beat him by a length and three quarters. That’s three straight wins and the third graded stakes victory for the 4-year old colt by OBS graduate Goldencents, consigned to the 2018 OBS April Sale by Scanlon Training & Sales, Agent, where he was sold to J. Stevens Bloodstock, Agent, for $150,000 after working an eighth in :10 3/5 at the Under Tack Show. Earlier at Oaklawn on Saturday, Phoenix Thoroughbred III, Ltd.’s Scolding made a dazzling debut in a $60,000, six furlong maiden special weight test, battling head and head for the early lead, taking charge turning for home and drawing away down the stretch, scoring by six lengths under wraps at the wire. The 3-year-old daughter of OBS graduate Carpe Diem, trained by Steve Asmussen, earned $36,000 for the effort. Consigned to the 2019 OBS April Sale by Wavertree Stables, Inc. Klaravich Stables, Inc.’s Network Effect pressed the pace from the inside in the early going of Saturday’s $100,000 Big Drama Stakes at Gulfstream, moved to take command inside the final furlong and drew away late to score by two lengths. Fellow OBS graduate Last Judgement (April ‘18) came running late to finish third. It’s the first stakes win for the graded stakes placed 4-year-old Florida-bred colt by Mark Valeski, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 before he was purchased for $95,000 out of the Blue River Bloodstock consignment at the 2018 OBS April Sale. On Friday at Oaklawn, Wolfe Racing LLC and Hugh H. Robertson’s Piece of My Heart stepped into stakes company for the first time in the $80,000 Gardenia Stakes, went right to the lead, turned back a wall of challengers after turning for home and cruised to victory by a length and a half. That’s two straight wins for the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Flat Out, trained by McLean Robertson, now 8-3-1-2 with earnings of $135,750. She was sold for $35,000 by Bobby Jones Equine LLC, Agent, at the 2018 OBS Winter Mixed Sale.

OBS March grads busy in Japan

OBS 2019 March graduates were busy in Japan on Saturday, posting a pair of runaway victories.

On Saturday at Tokyo Racecourse, Kazumi Yoshida’s unbeaten Lecce Baroque delivered a near carbon copy of her 10-length February maiden victory, getting away quickly from the gate in a $129,039 1400m allowance test, setting the pace under a hold and then drawing off without urging to a nine length win. Now two for two for trainer Kazao Fujisawa, the 3-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo has earned $123,148 to date. Over at Fukushima, Masahiro Azu’s Silver Jack, in the money in four of six previous trips to the post, took the lead shortly after the start of a 1150m, $90,309 maiden test and never looked back, drawing away late to a five length victory under Nanako Fujita. It was the 100th career victory for the pioneering 22-year-old rider, the JRA’s only licensed female jockey. Silver Jack, a 3-year-old colt by Fed Biz, breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 before he was purchased for $30,000 out of the All Dreams Equine consignment. Long Weekend scores in Oaklawn’s Bachelor Stakes

B.C.W.T. Ltd.’s Long Weekend broke sharply to take the lead and set the pace in Oaklawn’s 100,000 Bachelor Stakes on Saturday, battled head to head with Echo Town down the length of the stretch and was best at the wire in a photo. Fellow OBS graduate Lykan (June ’19) rallied to finish third. Although stakes opportunities are scarce, a pair of promising OBS graduates posted allowance victories on Sunday.

At Oaklawn, Hronis Racing LLC’s Edgeway came around horses to take command of a $61,000 six furlong allowance at the top of the stretch and rolled from there to victory by a length and a half, with fellow OBS graduate High On Gin (June ’19, October ’18) checking in third. Third in Oaklawn’s Purple Martin Stakes in her last start, the 3-year-old filly by Competitive Edge, trained by John Sadler, has been on the board in all three starts and earned $98,800 to date. Homewrecker Racing LLC’s Hop Kat is two for two after taking a six furlong, $39,000 allowance at Gulfstream Park. He sat just off the pace, came out for the drive, collared the leaders a sixteenth from home and scored by a length. An eighth length winner of his debut at Churchill last May, the 3-year-old colt by Stay Thirsty has earned $71,888 for trainer Eddie Kenneally. Merneith romps in Oaklawn maiden dash

HRH Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud’s Merneith pressed the pace in the early going of a $60,000 Maiden Special Weight dash at Oaklawn Park on Sunday, took command three wide turning for home and drew away effortlessly down the stretch to a 10-1/4 length victory. Second by a nose on February 23rd at Santa Anita, the 3-year-old daughter of American Pharoah is now 3-1-2-0  for trainer Bob Baffert after skipping six furlongs over the sloppy track in 1:09 4/5. A total of 1,231 juveniles have been cataloged for the four-day sale, now set for Tuesday through Friday, June 9th – June 12th. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sale was rescheduled from April 21st – 24th.

  • Hip No. 1 – 308 will sell Tuesday, June 9th.
  • Hip No. 309 – 616 will be sold Wednesday, June 10th.
  • Hip No. 617 – 924 will sell Thursday, June 11th.
  • Hip No. 925 – 1231 will be sold Friday, June 12th. All sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The Under Tack Show will be divided into seven sessions, set for Sunday through Saturday, May 31st – June 6th, all beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Identifier scores in Gulfstream’s Hal’s Hope Stakes

Gelfenstein Farm’s Identifier was ignored at 60-1 in Saturday’s $100,000 Hal’s Hope Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park, but rated nicely off the pace in the early going, came around horses for the stretch run and was along in time to score by a length. It’s the first stakes win for the 4-year-old colt by Creative Cause, purchased for $80,000 out of the Off the Hook consignment at the 2018 OBS April Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 3/5. OBS Reschedules Two-Year-Old Sales

The Ocala Breeders’ Sale Company has rescheduled its 2020 Spring and June Sales of Two Year Olds in Training in response to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

“As we all continue to deal with the current circumstances,” said OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski. “We need to balance a sense of social responsibility with providing our consignors the best opportunity to market their horses and give buyers the best place to obtain them.”

The Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training has been moved to Tuesday through Friday, June 9th – 12th, with the Under Tack Show set for Sunday through Saturday, May 31st – June 6th. Each Under Tack session will begin at 7:30 a.m. The catalog will stay intact with the original horses hip numbered for the sale.

The June Two-Year-Olds & Horses of Racing Age Sale is now scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, July 14th – 17th with entries closing May 4th. The Under Tack Show will be held Monday, July 6th through Saturday, July 11th.  The Under Tack sessions will all begin at 7:30 a.m.

In an effort to provide another opportunity to buy and sell Two-Year-Olds, OBS is considering adding a Two-Year-Old in Training session to the October Yearling Sale, presently scheduled for October 6th through 9th.

Wells Bayou wins Louisiana Derby

Clint Gasaway, Lance Gasaway, Madaket Stables LLC and Wonder Stables’ Wells Bayou joined the leaders of the 3-year-old division on Saturday, taking the lead shortly after the start of the $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds and never looking back en route to victory by a length and a half. It’s the first stakes win for the son of Lookin At Lucky, now 5-3-1-0 with $845,293 in earnings for trainer Brad Cox. The 2019 Louisiana Derby (G2) winner, Allied Racing Stable, LLC’s By My Standards, returned for the $400,000 New Orleans Classic Stakes (G2) and sat just off the pace, took over after turning for home and eased away to a three length victory. It’s the second stakes win for the 4-year old colt by OBS graduate Goldencents, trained by Bret Calhoun, now 8-4-2-1 and closing in on a million with $921,910 in earnings. Consigned to the 2018 OBS April Sale by Scanlon Training & Sales, Agent, he was sold to J. Gaining Ground Racing LLC’s Factor This went right to the front in the $300,000 Muniz Memorial Classic and stayed there to the wire, drawing away in the stretch to a three length victory. It’s the second straight graded stakes score and third stakes win for the 5-year-old horse by The Factor, purchased for $11,000 out of the Niall Brennan Stables consignment at the 2017 OBS April Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. William and Corrine Heiligbrodt’s Vacherie Girl was much the best in the $75,000 Crescent City Oaks, coming from off the pace, taking command in the final furlong and drawing off to win by 3-1/2 lengths. That’s two stakes wins for the 3-year-old daughter of Tapiture, trained by Steve Asmussen, now 5-3-0-1 with earnings of $143,307. Ivery Sisters Racing’s Monte Man stalked the pace in the $75,000 Costa Rising Stakes, battled for the lead in the stretch and proved best by a length at the finish. It’s the seventh stakes win for the 7-year-old gelding by Custom for Carlos, winner of the 2018 renewal of the Costa Rising and second in the race last year. Sold for $125,000 by Royal Thoroughbred International at the 2015 OBS March Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5, he’s now 39-14-7-5 for trainer Ron Faucheux, and has earned $582,441 to date. watch his under tack video

Cara Oliver’s Hear My Prayer led from gate to wire in Saturday’s $75,000 Melody of Colors Stakes at Gulfstream, drawing clear in the stretch and winning by a length and three quarters. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by The Big Beast, trained by David Fisher, now 5-3-0-0 with earnings of $90,310. Consigned by Camelot Acres Racing and Sales, Agent, she went through the ring at the 2018 OBS October Yearling Sale.

B.C.W.T. Ltd.’s Long Weekend scored a wire to wire victory in the $90,000 Gazebo Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday, opening up in the stretch and cruising to a 4-3/4 length victory. Hip No. 598, a son of Upstart consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, went to Mike Ryan, Agent for $600,000 to top the second and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat at Saturday’s session of the Under Tack Show, is out of Blue Beryl, by Bernstein, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS March graduate Brigand.

 

  • Hip No. 424, a daughter of Bernardini consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to Stonestreet Stables LLC for $575,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat at Friday’s Under Tack Session, is out of Song Collection, by Unbridled’s Song, a full sister to graded stakes winner Old Fashioned.

  • John C. Kimmel, Agent, paid $300,000 for Hip No. 559, Caller Two, a son of Malibu Moon consigned by McKathan Bros. Sales, Agent. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth on Saturday in :10 flat, is out of Ameristralia (AUS), by Fastnet Rock, a full sister to graded stakes winner Fiano Romano.

For the session, 146 horses sold for a total of $14,893,000, averaging $102,007 with a $55,000 median figure. The buyback percentage was 39.4%.

For the entire sale, 291 horses sold for $27,902,500 compared with 306 bringing $44,248,500 a year ago. The average price was $95,885 compared with $144,603 in 2019 while the median price was $50,000 compared with $80,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 39.6%; it was 23.9% in 2019.

The sale topper was Hip No. 237, a daughter of American Pharoah consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. She sold Tuesday to Katsumi Yoshida for $650,000. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent was sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $650,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay filly, whose quarter in :20 2/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session was the sale’s fastest at the distance, is out of Megalicious, by Songandaprayer, and is a half sister to stakes placed My Sweet Stella.

  • Hip No. 258, a son of Into Mischief consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Myracehorse.com and Spendthrift for $500,000. The bay colt, who turned in a quarter in :21 flat at Friday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes placed Montessa G, by Montbrook, a daughter of stakes winner Doc’s Doll.

  • Sandin Syndicate Stable LLC, W.E. Morey Agent, paid $255,000 for Hip No. 241, a son of Curlin consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent. The bay colt, who worked a :21 1/5 quarter on Friday, is out of Michelle d’Oro, by Bernardini, a daughter of grade one winner Champagne d’Oro.

For the session, 134 horses sold for a total of $12,550,500, averaging $93,660 with a $50,000 median figure. The buyback percentage was 44.4%
