Colts by Blame and Quality Road sped quarters in :20 4/5 to post the fastest works at the distance at the first session of the Under Tack Show for Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 Spring Sale of Two Year Olds in Training.

  • Hip No. 149, consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc., (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, is a bay colt by Blame out of Mommo, by Speightstown, from the family of grade one stakes winner Siphonic.
  • Hip No. 1236, a bay colt by Quality Road consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, is a half brother to stakes placed Into Mystic, out of Loveofalifetime, by Medaglia d’Oro, a half sister to graded stakes winner Savorthetime.

Spring Sale’s Under Tack Show begins Sunday, May 31

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s rescheduled 2020 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Sunday, May 31st, and continues through Saturday, June 6th. All seven sessions begin at 7:30 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-176 plus supplements 1233-1244 will breeze on Sunday. Hip No.’s 177-352 and supplements 1245-1256 go to the track Monday; Hip No’s 353-528 plus supplements 1257-1267 breeze Tuesday; Hip No’s 529-704 and supplements 1268-1278 work Wednesday, Hip No.’s 705-880 plus supplements 1279-1289 breeze Thursday, Hip No’s 881-1056 and supplements 1290-1300 work on Friday and Hip No’s 1057-1231 plus supplements 1301-1315 will go to the track Saturday.

The Sale, postponed since its original April dates, is now set for Tuesday, June 9th through Friday, June 12th with each session beginning at 10:00 a.m. For the first time, online bidding will be available. The Spring Sale has grown into a major international marketplace and become a shining centerpiece of OBS’ three juvenile auctions.  By My Standards, winner of the recent Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in May became the 40th Spring Sale graduate to surpass.  Thirteen Spring Sale graduates are Eclipse Award winners, the latest the trio featured on the 2020 catalog covers.

William & Corinne Heiligbrodt’s Mitole earned the Eclipse Award as 2019’s Champion Male Sprinter winning six of seven starts including the Churchill Downs S. (G1), Metropolitan Handicap (G1), Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) and Forego Stakes (G1). He wrapped up the year and the championship with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). Consigned to the 2017 Spring Sale by Grassroots Training & Sales, the son of Eskendereya was sold for $140,000 after an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Trained to a title by Steve Asmussen, he goes to stud with a 14-10-2-2 career record and earnings of $3,104,910. Bloom Racing Stable LLC, Madaket Stables LLC and Allen Racing LLC’s Midnight Bisou, the fourth OBS graduate to win the Eclipse Award as Champion Older Dirt Female, joined Jewel Princess (1996), Fleet Indian (2006) and Ginger Punch (2007). Also trained by Steve Asmussen, she racked up seven graded stakes wins in 2019, highlighted by her victory over co-finalist Elate in Saratoga’ s Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. She was purchased by Jeffrey Bloom for $80,000 out of the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2017 April Sale after working an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. Exline-Border Racing LLC, David A. Bernsen, Susanna Wilson and Dan Hudock’s Storm the Court earned the title of Champion 2-Year-Old Male with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Consigned to the 2019 April Sale by Woodside Ranch, Agent, he was purchased for $60,000 by Marette Farrell, Agent for Exline-Border Racing LLC after turning in an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5. Spring Sale Supplemental catalog now online

The Supplemental catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 Spring Sale of Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is now online via the OBS website at obssales.com.

Seventy eight horses have been supplemented to the four-day sale, scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, June 9th – June 12th. The horses are distributed equally for the under tack shows and the sale and will be offered at the end of each originally scheduled session as follows:

OBS Reschedules Two-Year-Old Sales

The Ocala Breeders’ Sale Company has rescheduled its 2020 Spring and June Sales of Two Year Olds in Training in response to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

“As we all continue to deal with the current circumstances,” said OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski. “We need to balance a sense of social responsibility with providing our consignors the best opportunity to market their horses and give buyers the best place to obtain them.”

The Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training has been moved to Tuesday through Friday, June 9th – 12th, with the Under Tack Show set for Sunday through Saturday, May 31st – June 6th. Each Under Tack session will begin at 7:30 a.m. The catalog will stay intact with the original horses hip numbered for the sale.

The June Two-Year-Olds & Horses of Racing Age Sale is now scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, July 14th – 17th with entries closing May 4th. The Under Tack Show will be held Monday, July 6th through Saturday, July 11th.  The Under Tack sessions will all begin at 7:30 a.m.

In an effort to provide another opportunity to buy and sell Two-Year-Olds, OBS is considering adding a Two-Year-Old in Training session to the October Yearling Sale, presently scheduled for October 6th through 9th.

Hip No. 598, a son of Upstart consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, went to Mike Ryan, Agent for $600,000 to top the second and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat at Saturday’s session of the Under Tack Show, is out of Blue Beryl, by Bernstein, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS March graduate Brigand.

 

  • Hip No. 424, a daughter of Bernardini consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to Stonestreet Stables LLC for $575,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat at Friday’s Under Tack Session, is out of Song Collection, by Unbridled’s Song, a full sister to graded stakes winner Old Fashioned.
  • Hip No. 386, a son of Constitution consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, went to Dennis O’Neill for $550,000. The bay colt, who turned in a quarter in :20 4/5 on Friday, is out of Screwgie, by Smart Strike, a daughter of graded stakes winner Roshani.

For the session, 146 horses sold for a total of $14,893,000, averaging $102,007 with a $55,000 median figure. The buyback percentage was 39.4%.

For the entire sale, 291 horses sold for $27,902,500 compared with 306 bringing $44,248,500 a year ago. The average price was $95,885 compared with $144,603 in 2019 while the median price was $50,000 compared with $80,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 39.6%; it was 23.9% in 2019.

The sale topper was Hip No. 237, a daughter of American Pharoah consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. She sold Tuesday to Katsumi Yoshida for $650,000. March Sale begins Tuesday

The 2020 OBS March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training begins Tuesday, March 17th. Hip No.’s 1 – 340 will sell Tuesday and Hip No.’s 341 – 681 will be offered Wednesday, March 18th. Both sessions will begin at 10:30 a.m. As always the sale will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and the Blood-Horse, DRF and TDN websites.

The catalog can be viewed via the OBS website at http://obssales.com. The website’s searchable and sortable master index provides links to under tack and walking videos, pedigree and consignor information as well as pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed. It has also been updated to allow shortlist creation.

Leading up to Tuesday’s first session, OBS is taking precautionary measures for the well-being of March Sale patrons. Increased phone capacity and walking videos added to the website are additional measures for those unable to attend the Sale. OBS March Sale will be held as scheduled

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training will be held as scheduled. After careful consideration of the Coronavirus situation and consultation with consignors and prospective buyers, the OBS Board of Directors determined holding the sale as scheduled is the proper course of action.

“We are mindful of the nature of the situation, and continue to monitor circumstances that may force a change in our position,” said OBS president Tom Ventura. “Certainly there is heightened awareness of the importance of proper hygiene and we are taking steps to follow recommended sanitary protocols.”

Steps taken by OBS to assure the well-being of all March Sale patrons include increased cleaning schedules and protocols, doors not required to be locked for security will remain open to eliminate the need for patrons to use the handles, and all OBS employees will be instructed to follow sanitary procedures, to stay home if sick and help patrons have as safe and healthy visit to the sale as possible.

For prospective buyers unable to attend the March Sale or unsure about traveling at this time, OBS will increase phone bid capacity.

The third and final Under Tack session will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14th with Hip Numbers 455 – 681 scheduled to breeze. The March Sale itself is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17 – 18, with each session beginning at 10:30 a.m.

March Sale Under Tack Show begins Thursday, March 12

Ocala, Fl. – The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Thursday, March 12th.

There are three sessions, with Hips 1 – 227 breezing on the first day. Hips 228 – 454 will go Friday, March 13th and Hips 455 – 681 will go Saturday, March 14th. All three sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF, TDN and Blood-Horse websites.

A total of 681 juveniles are cataloged for the two-day sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17th and 18th, with both sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. Hip 1 – 340 will sell on Tuesday; Hips 341 – 681 will sell on Wednesday.

The past year saw more of the kind of racing results horsemen count on when they come to Ocala in March. Since the beginning of 2019, 111 March graduates were on the board 229 times in stakes races, with 49 horses accounting for 70 stakes victories. At the game’s highest level, 48 March grads won or placed 83 times in graded stakes with 22 scoring in 30 graded events.

The brightest star to emerge from last year’s March Sale was Jeff Drown and Don Rachel’s unbeaten Structor, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) as well as Belmont’s Pilgrim Stakes (G3). The now 3-year-old son of Palace Malice, trained by Chad Brown, has earned $709,500 to date. The 2019 March Sale also produced Reddam Racing LLC’s well-traveled Fore Left, who took Belmont’s Tremont Stakes in June, Santa Anita’s Sunny Slope Stakes in October and then scored in the UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) at Meydan in February. Those races helped propel the 3-year-old colt by Twirling Candy, trained by Doug O’Neill, to a 9-4-0-2 career record with $355,902 in earnings. The heaviest hitting March graduate for the past year has been Mucho Gusto, whose first start for new owner HRH Prince Faisal Bin Khaled was a 4-1/2 length victory in the 2019 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Bob Baffert, the 4-year-old colt by Mucho Macho Man has won or placed in seven graded stakes, also taking the Bob Hope (G3), Robert B. Lewis (G3), Lazaro Barrera (G3) and Affirmed (G3). When it came to speed, it was hard to outrun Crawford Farms Racing’s 2018 March graduate Shancelot, who began his career winning three straight, the last a 12-1/2 length victory in the Amsterdam Stakes (G2) at Saratoga. He ran 6-1/2 furlongs that afternoon in 1:14 flat after six furlongs in 1:07 3/5, shading Imperial Hint’s track record 1:07 4/5 set a day before. After placing in the H. Allen Jerkens (G1) and Santa Anita Spring Championship (G1, he ended the year with a second to fellow OBS graduate and champion Mitole (April ’17) in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). The 4-year-old colt by Shanghai Bobby turned in an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5 before he was purchased for $245,000 out of the Kings Equine consignment. OXO Equine’s Instilled Regard won Gulfstream’s Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2) in December and was third in last week’s Pegasus World Cup Invitational Turf (G1). The Ft. Lauderdale was the second graded stakes win for the 5-year-old son of Arch, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 before he was purchased for $1,050,000 out of the Tom McCrocklin consignment at the 2017 OBS March Sale. First Row Partners and Hidden Brook Farm’s Nay Lady Nay (IRE) finished the year in style, overcoming a rough start to take Churchill’s Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2) in November. It was the second straight stakes win for the now 4-year-old filly by No Nay Never, trained by Chad Brown, leaving her with a 5-3-1-0 record and $265,180 in earnings. The online catalog’s main page contains a link to a sortable master index providing searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed. Advanced search and filter capability has been added to allow shortlist creation. Summer Front colt tops Winter Mixed Sale’s final session

Hip No. 633, a yearling son of Summer Front consigned by Select Sales, Agent, went to Renee Dailey / Dailey Bloodstock LLC for $92,000 to top the Open Session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 Winter Mixed Sale. The bay colt is out of Diva Star, by Cherokee Run, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Captain Serious.

Hip No. 615, a yearling son of El Deal consigned by Kim Harrison (Top Speed Farm), Agent, was sold to Bill & Corinne Heiligbrodt for $70,000. The chestnut colt is out of stakes winner Coteau Kitten, by Tale of the Cat.

Hip No. 515, a yearling bay colt by Adios Charlie, went to K.O.I.D. Co., Ltd. for $40,000. Consigned by Bobby Jones Equine LLC, Agent, he’s out of Stolen Purse, by Artax, a half sister to stakes winner Lord Beer.

My Purple Haze Stables, Chris Englehart Agent, went to $40,000 for Hip No. 685, a yearling by War Dancer consigned by Sue Vacek, Agent. The bay colt, a half brother to stakes winner Bust Another, is out of I Drink Alone, by Intidab.

W. P. Stiritz paid $33,000 for Hip No. 543, a yearling daughter of Khozan consigned by Journeyman Bloodstock Services, Inc. (Brent & Crystal Fernung), Agent. The bay filly is out of Wave Bye Bye, by Congrats, a half sister to graded stakes winners Sailor’s Cap.

Hip No. 403, a yearling by Uncaptured consigned by Kelli Mitchell, Agent, was sold to K.O.I.D. Co., Ltd. for $30,000. The bay colt is out of K K’s Kitty, by Yes It’s True, a half sister to Sky Bay, champion 3-year-old filly in the Republic of Korea.

Hip No. 498, a yearling daughter of Valiant Minister also consigned by Kelli Mitchell, Agent, went to de Meric Stables, Agent, for $30,000. The bay filly is out of Silent Triumph, by City Zip, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Mind Control, who captured Aqueduct’s recent Toboggan Stakes (G3).

For the Open session, 200 horses sold for a total of $1,649,900 compared with 229 horses bringing $1,488,800 in 2019. The average price was $8,250 compared with $6,501 last year, while the median price was $5,000 compared with $4,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 24.5%; it was 14.9% in 2019.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 89 horses sold for a total of $1,941,000 compared with 106 horses grossing $1,777,100 in 2019. The average price was $21,809, up 30% compared with $16,765 a year ago, while the median price was $12,000, identical from last year’s figure. The buyback percentage was 35%; it was 26.9% last year.

For the Horses of Racing Age session, 70 horses grossed $1,366,900 compared with 64 selling for a total of $1,194,000 in 2019. The average was $19,527, up 4.7% from $18,656 a year ago, while the median price was $11,000, up 22.2% compared to $9,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 11.4%; it was 15.8% in 2019.

For the entire Winter Mixed Sale, 359 horses sold for a total of $4,957,800, compared to 399 horses bringing $4,459,900 last year. The average was $13,810, up 23.5% from $11,178 in 2019 while the median price was $7,000, compared with $6,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 25.4%; it was 18.6% in 2019.

The overall sale topper was Hip No. 4, a son of Union Rags consigned by Pelican State Thoroughbreds, Agent, sold to Blue Sky Stables for $165,000 to top the Consignor Preferred Session.
