Spring Sale’s Under Tack Show begins Sunday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2022 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Sunday, April 10th, and continues through Saturday, April 16th. All seven sessions begin at 8:00 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-176 will breeze on Sunday. Hip No.’s 177-352 go to the track Monday; Hip No.’s 353-528 breeze Tuesday; Hip No.’s 529-704 work Wednesday, Hip No.’s 705-880 breeze Thursday, Hip No’s 881-1056 work on Friday and Hip No’s 1057-1231 will go to the track Saturday.

The Sale is set for Tuesday, April 19th through Friday, April 22nd with each session beginning at 10:00 a.m. Hip No.’s 1-308 go on the block Tuesday, Hip No.’s 309-616 will be offered Wednesday, Hip No.’s 617-924 sell Thursday and Hip No.’s. 925-1231 will sell on Friday.

The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and via the TDN, DRF, Blood-Horse and Past The Wire websites. The workouts will be recorded and can be viewed on the website, in their entirety or by individual hip number. They will also be available in the Video Room as well as several kiosks in the breezeway and covered walking ring. Visitors to Ocala will find the videos available for in-room viewing at The Courtyard by Marriott, Holiday Inn & Suites, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton. March Sale Under Tack Show begins Thursday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2022 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Thursday, March 10th.

There are three sessions, with Hips 1 – 212 breezing on the first day. Hips 213 – 424 will go Friday, March 11th and Hips 425 – 635 will go Saturday, March 12th. A total of 635 juveniles are cataloged for the two-day sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15th and 16th, with both sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. Hips 1 – 316 will sell on Tuesday; Hips 317 – 635 on Wednesday.

The March Sale has a rich history of producing top class racehorses. Eclipse Award winners Forever Together, Stardom Bound and Midnight Lute are pictured on the catalog’s front cover, with champions Fleet Indian and Lost in the Fog joined by Japanese champion Asia Express on the back cover.

OBS March has produced 32 horses who have earned over a million dollars. The active millionaire roster is headed by Koichi Nishikawa’s Japanese star Café Pharoah, winner of the $2-million February Stakes for the second straight year. A four-time graded stakes winner, the 5-year-old son of American Pharoah was consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, to the 2019 OBS March Sale, and sold for $475,000 to Narvick International, Agent, after breezing an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5. Trained by Noriyuki Hori, he’s compiled an 11-6-0-0 career record with $3,001,697 in earnings.  watch his under tack video 

For the past year, OBS March graduates have continued to excel at the races. Since the beginning of 2021, 116 March graduates were on the board 203 times in stakes races, with 44 horses winning 65 black-type events. In graded stakes, 37 March grads won or placed 52 times with 14 horses accounting for 21 graded victories.

A trio of 2021 March graduates have made news recently headed by Baoma Corporation’s Eda, who scored her fourth straight stakes win in the Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) on Sunday at Santa Anita. Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, she was purchased for $550,000 by Donato Lanni, Agent, after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. C2 Racing Stable LLC and La Milagrosa Stable, LLC’s White Abarrio is a factor on the Derby Trail after his victory in Gulfstream’s Holy Bull Stakes (G3). A 3-year-old colt by Race Day, he’s trained by Saffie A. Joseph, Jr., and is now 4-3-0-1 with $240,850 in earnings. Peter L. Cantrell’s Call Me Midnight was an upset winner of the Lecomte Stakes (G3) at the Fair Grounds.. The 3-year-old son of champion OBS graduate Midnight Lute is trained by Keith Desormeaux now 7-2-1-0 with earnings of $221,806. Vanlangendonck succeeds O’Farrell as chairman of OBS board

Francis Vanlangendonck became the fifth chairman of the board in the history of Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company, Inc. Mike O’Farrell steps down after nearly 40 years as an OBS board member. George Onett was the first chairman in 1975, followed by Harry T. Mangurian, Jr., Norman Casse and Mike O’Farrell.

Vanlangendonck operates Summerfield Sales with his wife Barbara. Prior to being elected chairman, Francis has been an OBS board member since 1990, became secretary/treasurer in 2005 and then vice president from 2007-2021. Summerfield has been a perennial leading consignor at the OBS yearling and mixed sales. Last year, Summerfield ranked 15th nationally with yearling sales of nearly $9 million. Their full-service farm includes a swimming pond for rehabilitation and to prep and condition yearlings.

Mike O’Farrell was elected to the OBS board in 1983, was vice president from 1986-2006 and chairman since 2007 before stepping down this year. The O’Farrell family’s Ocala Stud has been a mainstay in Ocala since 1956 with Mike and his two sons, David and Joe now directing operations. Ocala Stud is synonymous with the Florida breeding industry and OBS. His father, Joe O’Farrell, was a true promoter of Florida breeding and pioneer of the two-year-old in training sale concept. He was one of the founding members of Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company, Inc. in 1974 and the first vice president of OBS.

Barry Eisaman was elected vice president of the OBS board. Dr. Eisaman, a veterinarian, has been secretary/treasurer of OBS since 2010 and was first elected to the OBS board in 1996. Along with his wife Shari, Eisaman operates Eisaman Equine which is a constant presence and leading consignor at the OBS Two-Year-Old in Training Sales.  Many of the top racing stables in the country rely on Eisaman Equine to provide the foundation for their young horses for their racing career and to rehabilitate older horses for their return to the races.

Mark Casse was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Mark and his wife Tina manage the vast Casse Racing operations from their base in Ocala. Mark has been an OBS board member since 2001 and his father Norman was a founding member of OBS and chairman of the board of OBS for over twenty years. Mark has won over 3,200 races as trainer with career earnings approaching $200 million. He has been inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

Joining the OBS Board for the first time are David O’Farrell, Ocala Stud and Paul Sharp, Paul Sharp Stables. The rest of the board includes Tom Ventura, President; Carl Bowling; Nick de Meric, de Meric Sales; Jimbo Gladwell, Top Line Sales; Jesse Hoppel, Coastal Equine; John Penn, Pennston Farm; Bryan Rice, Woodside Ranch; and Eddie Woods.

Destin Colt Tops Open Session of the 2022 OBS Winter Mixed Sale

Hip No. 505, a son of Destin named Last Drink consigned by Sue Vacek, Agent, went to Rosewood Farm for $95,000 to top Wednesday’s Open Session of the 2022 OBS Winter Mixed sale.  The gray or roan yearling colt is out of I Drink Alone, by Intidab, and is a ½ brother to stakes winner Bust Another.

Hip No. 454, a yearling daughter of Mendelssohn consigned by Vargas Sales, Agent, was sold to Brookdale Farm for $75,000. The dark bay/brown filly is out of Charming Becky, by Dixie Union, from the family of grade one stakes winner Mandy’s Gold.

W.D. North Thoroughbreds LLC paid $55,000 for Hip No. 442, a son of The Factor consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent. The yearling bay colt is out of Blameitonthebadboy, by Blame, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner Sky Haven.

Hip 472, a yearling son of Yoshida (JPN) consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, was purchased by Machmer Hall for $40,000. The dark bay or brown filly is out of De Marquee, by Tiz Wonderful, from the family of Canadian champion Bold Ruritana.

More Than A Party, Hip 562, was the top selling broodmare of the open session for $52,000.  Consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent, the graded stakes placed stakes winning bay mare is by More Than Ready and out of Party to Party, by Jules, from the immediate family of In Summation.  She sold in foal to Jess’s Dream.

For the Open session, 186 horses sold for a total of $2,075,600 compared with 236 horses bringing $2,023,500 in 2021. The average price was $11,159 compared with $8,574 last year, while the median price was $7,000 compared with $4,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 8.8%; it was 19.7% in 2021.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 150 horses sold for a total of $3,117,800, compared with 99 horses grossing $1,896,300 in 2021. The average price was $20,785 compared with $19,155 a year ago, while the median price was $10,000 compared with $10,100 last year. The buyback percentage was 12.2%; it was 30.3% last year.

For the Horses of Racing Age session, 81 horses grossed $1,499,700 compared with 73 selling for a total of $1,692,500 in 2021. The average was $18,515, compared to $23,185 a year ago, while the median price was $11,000.  It was $13,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 10%; it was 12% in 2021.

For the entire Winter Mixed Sale, 417 horses sold for a total of $6,693,100, compared to 408 horses bringing $5,612,300 last year. The average was $16,051, up from $13,756 in 2021 while the median price was $8,500, compared with $6,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 10.3%; it was 21.3% in 2021.

Next on the OBS agenda is the March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training, scheduled for March 15 – 16. The Under Tack Show is set for March 10 – 12, beginning each morning at 8:00 a.m.

Gun Runner filly Tops Consignor Preferred Session of the 2022 OBS Winter Mixed Sale

Hip No. 86, consigned by Get Away Farm, Agent, went to Breeze Easy LLC, Mike Hall for $275,000 to top the Consignor Preferred Session on the first day of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2022 Winter Mixed Sale. Hip No. 180, a bay son of Laoban consigned by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, was purchased by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing for $160,000.  He’s out of Steve’s Philly by Tale of Ekati, and is a full brother to current stakes winner Yo Cuz.

Hip No. 25, a yearling by Maclean’s Music, went to Woodford Thoroughbreds for $150,000. Consigned by Silver Oaks Farm (Danielle Loya), Agent, the dark bay or brown filly is out of stakes placed Beauty for Ashes and is a half-sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Beautiful Shot. Freedom Speaks fastest at OBS Winter Mixed Sale Under Tack Show; Sale begins

Freedom Speaks, hip 253 in the 2022 OBS Winter Mixed Sale turned in the fastest 3/8 mile workout at the January 24 Under Tack show in a record 31 2/5. Consigned by Best A Luck Farm as agent, the newly minted 3yo filly by American Freedom out of the Macho Uno mare Wicked Speed, a half-sister to Horse of the Year Fatal Bullet.

 

  • Sonic Thrust, hip 268, turned in a breeze in 31 4/5. Consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales, the Twirling Candy colt is a half-brother to multiple stakes-placed Brimstone Island and out of the Broad Brush mare Broad Sound, who is out of Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan winner Miss Legality.

 

  • Not Mercy, hip 300, went in 32 flat. The filly by Laoban is out of the winning Sea of Secrets mare Mercy’s Delight and from the family of European Champion Rose Bowl. He is consigned by Coastal Equine (Jesse Hoppel) as agent.

 

  • Calculated, cataloged as hip 278, breezed in 32 1/5. The Klimt colt is out of the Grade 3 Stakes placed Hennessy mare Dos Lunas also from the Grassroots Training & Sales consignment.

The start of the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Winter Mixed Sale’s Horses of Racing Age Section has been moved back one hour to 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 24th due to a forecast of unseasonably cold temperatures early in the day.

There are 115 horses cataloged in the Racing Age section, with Hip No.’s 251- 329 in the original printed Winter Mixed Sale catalog. A printed supplemental catalog, including Racing Age supplements Hip No’s 330 – 362, is now available at the sales grounds and may be viewed on the OBS website at:  http://obssales.com. Additional Racing Age supplements Hip No.’s 363 – 365 have been added. Their catalog pages can also be viewed on the website and are available in printed form at the sales office.

Winter Mixed Sale supplemental catalog now online

The supplemental catalog to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2022 Winter Mixed Sale is now available in the company’s website in the sale’s main page. go to the Winter Mixed Sale

A total of 52 horses have been supplemented to the sale, highlighted by a pair of stakes placed newly turned 3-year-olds. Hip No. 334, Winging It, a colt by Into Mischief, was second in Gulfstream’s Proud Man Stakes. A half brother to two stakes winners, he’s out of Campionessa, by A.P. Indy. Hip No. 349, Fifth Anniversary, a daughter of Runhappy out of My Lady Lauren, by Hard Spun, was second in the Woodbine Cares Stakes.

Eight horses have been supplemented to the Preferred Session, for a total of 205 horses cataloged as Hip No.’s 1 – 205. The Session will begin Tuesday, January 25th at 11 a.m.

The addition of 33 supplements swells the Horses of Racing Age Session to a total of 112, cataloged as Hip No.’s 251 – 362, beginning immediately following the Preferred Session.

Eleven horses have been added to the Open Session, which gets underway Wednesday, January 26th at 11 a.m. with a total of 249 horses cataloged as Hip No.’s 401 – 649.

The 2022 OBS Sale Schedule

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company has released its 2022 Sales Calendar.

The Winter Mixed Sale with Horses of Racing Age section in January opens the OBS schedule, followed by Sales of Two-Year-Olds in Training in March, April and June. Selected and Open Yearling Sales conclude the year in October.

Ransom the Moon colt tops Open Yearling Sale

Hip No. 442, a son of Ransom the Moon consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent, went to Redwings for $170,000 to top the Open session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2021 October Yearling Sale.  The dark bay or brown colt is out of Bold Lady, by Aikenite, a half sister to grade one stakes placed stakes winner Mambo in Seattle.

  • Hip No. 406, a daughter of Awesome Slew consigned by Camelot Acres Racing and Sales, Agent, was sold to RiceHorse, Agent, for $100,000. The bay filly, a half sister to stakes winning OBS Yearling Sale graduate Hear My Prayer, is out of Additional Prayer, by Songandaprayer.
  • Hip No. 318, a daughter of Tunwoo consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, went to Eddie Plesa, Agent for Karl & Cathi Glassman, for $85,000. The dark bay or brown filly, out of stakes winner Savingtime, by Kantharos, is a half sister to OBS Yearling Sale graduate Outfoxed, winner of two stakes in three starts including Gulfstream’s recent FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes.
  • S B M Training and Sales went to $70,000 for Hip No. 523, a son of Kantharos consigned by K P Sales, Agent. The bay colt, out of stakes winner Frisk Her, by Officer, is a half brother to graded stakes placed OBS graduate Takeoff.
  • Hip No. 287, Fortheloveofart, a son of Noble Bird consigned by Kim Harrison (Top Speed Farm), Agent, was sold to Moonshadow for $60,000. The bay colt is a half brother to graded stakes winning OBS Yearling Sale graduate Jalen Journey, winner of the recent De Francis Memorial Stakes (G3), out of Petunia Face, by Congrats.
  • Hip No. 518, a daughter of Army Mule consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, went to Elusive Thoroughbreds for $60,000. The chestnut filly is out of First Fed Biz, by Fed Biz, a half sister to graded stakes placed OBS Yearling Sale graduate Bourbon Cowboy.
  • Barolo Bloodstock paid $52,000 for Hip No. 260, a daughter of American Freedom consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent. The bay filly is out of Mollie Merisa, by Harlan’s Holiday, a full sister to stakes placed Holiday’s Jewel.
  • Hip No. 382, Khozanthebarbarian, a son of Khozan consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, was sold for $52,000 to Dewie Mayfield, Agent. The bay colt is out of Unveil the Mask, by Harlan’s Holiday, from the family of graded stakes winner Forever Land.
  • Hip No. 309, a daughter of Mo Town consigned by Cuatro Caminos, Agent, was purchased by Vortex Racing for $50,000. A half sister to unbeaten 2-year-old Jack Christopher, winner of Belmont’s recent Champagne Stakes (G1), the dark bay or brown filly is out of Rushin No Blushin, by Half Ours, a half sister to grade one winner Street Boss.

For the session, 276 yearlings sold for a total of $5,173,500, compared with 258 bringing a total of $2,811,900 a year ago. The average price was $18,745, up 72% compared with $10,899 in 2020, while the median price was $15,000 double the $7,500 figure a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.1% compared with 21.3% a year ago.

At Tuesday’s Selected Yearling Sale, 108 horses sold for a total of $4,714,000, up 38.8% compared with 86 yearlings bringing $3,397,000 a year ago. The average price was $43,648, up 10.5% compared with $39,500 last year, while the median price was $32,000, rising 14.3% compared with $28,000 in 2020. The buyback percentage was 19.4%; it was 36.3% a year ago.

  • Hip No. 4, a son of Khozan consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, went to Elusive Thoroughbreds for $125,000. The bay colt is out of Karen’s Wildcat, by Wildcat Heir, from the family of stakes winner Pleasant Dilemma.
  • Finisterre Racing paid $125,000 for Hip No. 121, a son of Kantharos consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent. The bay colt, a half brother to graded stakes winning OBS Yearling Sale graduate Happy Farm, is out of Gospel Girl, by Holy Bull.
  • Hip No. 22, a daughter of Kantharos consigned by Silver Oaks Farm (Danielle Loya), Agent, was sold to Al London for $120,000. The chestnut filly, a full sister to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Bucchero, is out of Meetmeontime, by General Meeting.
  • Hip No. 69, a daughter of Practical Joke consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, was purchased for $110,00 by de Meric Sales, Agent. The bay filly is out of T’as d’Beaux Yeux, by Desert Party, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS graduate Doctor Chit.
  • Pick View LLC went to $110,000 for Hip No. 117, a son of Mendelssohn consigned by Colin Brennan Bloodstock, Agent. The gray or roan colt is out of Fleet Goddess, by Holy Bull, a daughter of grade one stakes winner Family Enterprize.
  • Hip No. 74, a son of Practical Joke consigned by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC, went to Calumet Farm for $105,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Truly Charming, by Elusive Quality, a half sister to stakes winner Lexington Street
  • Reussi Sales paid $100,000 for Hip No. 18, a daughter of Army Mule consigned by Boutte Sales, Agent. The bay filly is out of Mandolin, by Midnight Lute, a daughter of graded stakes winner War Thief.
  • Hip No. 111, a daughter of Gun Runner consigned by Colin Brennan Bloodstock, Agent, was sold to Champion Equine LLC for $100,000. The gray or roan filly is out of Design Mine, by Mineshaft, a full sister to graded stakes winner Redding Colliery.

For the Selected Yearling Sale, 99 horses sold for a total of $4,498,500, up 32.4% compared with 86 yearlings bringing $3,397,000 a year ago. The average price was $45,439, up 15% compared with $39,500 last year, while the median price was $32,000, rising 14.3% compared with $28,000 in 2020. The buyback percentage was 26,1%; it was 36.3% a year ago.
