Distorted Humor colt fastest at March Sale’s first Under Tack Session

Hip No. 142, a son of Distorted Humor consigned by Southern Chase Farm, Inc. (Greg & Karen Dodd), Agent, sped a quarter in :20 3/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the first session of the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training. The bay colt is a half brother to stakes placed Glamoride out of Driven, by Forestry.

March Sale Under Tack Show begins Thursday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Thursday, March 7th.

There are three sessions, with Hips 1 – 192 breezing on the first day. Hips 193 – 384 will go Friday, March 8th and Hips 385 – 577 will go Saturday, March 9th. All three sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF, TDN and Blood-Horse websites.

A total of 577 juveniles are cataloged for the two-day sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12th and 13th, with both sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. Hip 1 – 288 will sell on Tuesday; Hips 289 – 577 will sell on Wednesday.

The past year has seen a continuation of the high level of performance horsemen expect from OBS March Sale graduates. Since the beginning of 2018, 110 March graduates were on the board 224 times in stakes races, with 58 horses accounting for 80 stakes victories. At the game’s highest level, 51 March grads won or placed 89 times in graded stakes with 23 scoring in 26 graded events.

The summer’s biggest headline went to Lee Pokoik’s catalog cover girl Sippican Harbor, who charged to the lead a sixteenth from home and won Saratoga’s $350,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) by two lengths. Consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, the now 3-year-old filly by Orb went through the ring at last year’s March sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. Breeze Easy LLC’s Shang Shang Shang, who shares the catalog cover, came out of last year’s March Sale, broke her maiden at Keeneland at first asking and then traveled to Royal Ascot to take on the boys in the Norfolk Stakes (G2).  The Florida-bred daughter of Shanghai Bobby led all the way, holding off a late charge to win by a nose.  A two time OBS graduate, she was purchased out of the SBM Training & Sales consignment by Breeze Easy for $200,000 at the 2018 OBS March Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. She had been sold previously as a short yearling by Summerfield at the 2017 Winter Mixed Sale. Trained by Wesely Ward, she has earned $101,524 to date. watch her under tack video

William H. Lawrence’s Analyze It, featured on the catalog’s back cover, has two graded stakes wins to his credit, winning the Cecil B. DeMille (G3) at Del Mar at two and Keeneland’s Transylvania Stakes (G3) last April. The colt by Point of Entry ended his sophomore campaign with a third place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). Trained by Chad Brown, he’s now 8-3-3-1 with $759,400 in earnings. The 2018 March Sale also produced a pair of talented colts in Michael Lund Petersen’s Mucho Gusto and Hollendorfer LLC, Pearl Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds’ Gunmetal Gray, one-two in the recent Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. It was the second graded stakes win for the colt by Mucho Macho Man, winner of Del Mar’s Bob Hope Stakes (G3) at two. Consigned to the 2018 OBS March Sale by Kirkwood Stables, Agent, he turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. One of the newest members in the long line of March Sale graded stakes winners is Tom R. Durant’s Silver Dust, who scored in the Mineshaft Handicap (G3) at Fair Grounds in February. It was the first stakes win for the 5-year-old gelding by Tapit, now 19-4-4-2 with $354,607 in earnings for trainer Bret Calhoun. The latest star to emerge from the 2018 March Sale is Leonard C. Green’s A Thread of Blue, who took the Palm Beach Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park last Saturday. It was third straight win for the 3-year-old colt by Hard Spun, who took Gulfstream’s Dania Beach Stakes in his previous start. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, he’s now 7-4-1-1 with earnings of $241,590. Silver Dust scores in Fair Grounds’ Mineshaft Handicap

Tom R. Durant’s Silver Dust moved three-wide into contention on the far turn in Saturday’s$150,000 Mineshaft Handicap (G3) at Fair Grounds, came into the stretch in front and stayed there to the wire, scoring by 2-1/4 lengths. It’s the first stakes win for the 5-year-old gelding by Tapit, now 19-4-4-2 with $354,607 in earnings for trainer Bret Calhoun. Peter Redekop‘s  Anothertwistafate took the lead at the start of Golden Gate’s $101,800 El Camino Real Derby on Saturday, opened up daylight after turning for home and cruised away down the stretch to a seven length victory. Fellow OBS graduate More Ice (April ’18, October ’17) checked in third. It’s the third straight win and first stakes score for the 3-year-old colt by Scat Daddy, purchased for $360,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2018 OBS June Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Three Diamonds Farm’s Bonus Points was relaxed off the pace in the early going of Saturday’s $100,000 John B. Campbell Stakes at Laurel, but moved between horses to reach the leaders turning for home, swung out for the drive and was up late to score by a neck. That’s three stakes wins for the 5-year-old graded stakes placed son of Majestic Warrior, consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC, Agent, to the 2016 OBS April Sale, where he worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Curragh Racing II LLC’s Killybegs Captain went right to the front in Saturday’s $75,000 Pelican Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, set a rapid pace, turned back 1-5 favorite Imperial Hint turning for home and drew away to win by 4-1/2 lengths. Fellow OBS graduate Sweetontheladies (April ’16) came on late to be second. It’s the first stakes victory for the 4-year-old son of Mizzen Mast, trained by John Terranova, now 17-5-3-1 with $220,653 in earnings. The same connections scored two races later on the Tampa card when Heavenly Score slipped through on the rail in the $50,000 Minaret Stakes and took command late to score a two length victory. The 5-year-old graded stakes placed daughter of Even the Score picked up her first stakes win, improved her record to 15-5-2-3 and boosted her bankroll to $297,150. A three time OBS graduate, she was sold as a weanling by Perrone Sales, Ltd, Agent for McDowell Farm, at the 2014 Fall Mixed Sale and then resold by Kim Harrison (Top Speed Farm), Agent, at the 2015 August Yearling Sale. The March Sale is now online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com.

A total of 577 juveniles have been cataloged for the two-day sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12th and 13th, with both sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Under Tack Show will span three days, beginning Thursday, March 7th with Hips 1 – 192. Hips 193 – 384 will breeze Friday, March 8th and Hips 385 – 577 will go Saturday, March 9th. March graduates have provided value at all price levels. Graded stakes winner Take Charge Paula, a $50,000 purchase in 2017, earned over $450,000. Multiple graded stakes winner Blended Citizen, sold for $85,000, provided a return of over $400,000. Multiple graded winner Collected brought $170,000 in 2015 and earned nearly $3-million. Graded stakes winner Analyze It went for $190,000 in 2017 and earned over $750,000. Horses are cataloged from all over the country, and buyers will find 92 Florida-breds and 79 New York-breds in the 2019 sale.

“Since we expanded the sale format in 2015, March has really become a much broader marketplace,” said OBS director of sales Tod Wojciechowski. “We were able to add a group of precocious horses in addition to the select type horses they already expect in March. All you have to do is look at the list of runners that have come out of this sale over the past few years to see that quality horses come in all different types and price ranges.”

The OBS March Sale has produced six champions, 29 millionaires and seven Breeders’ Cup victories. Since the beginning of 2018, 105 OBS March graduates have won or placed 207 times in stakes races including 82 graded events.

The 2018 March Sale produced a trio of high class runners including Breeze Easy LLC’s unbeaten globetrotter Shang Shang Shang who won at first asking at Keeneland for trainer Wesley Ward then flew to Royal Ascot and led all the way to win the Norfolk Stakes (G2) against the boys. The 3-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Shanghai Bobby is a two time OBS graduate, purchased out of the SBM Training & Sales consignment by Breeze Easy for $200,000 after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. OBS March made its presence felt at the prestigious Saratoga meeting when Lee Pokoik’s Sippican Harbor scored a 17-length maiden victory and followed it ten days later by charging from far off the pace to take the $350,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) by two lengths. Hollendorfer LLC, Pearl Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds’ Gunmetal Gray was unveiled at Del Mar where he broke his maiden in his second start. He followed it with a second to champion Game Winner in Santa Anita’s American Pharoah Stakes (G1) in September. Elusive Quality colt tops Winter Mixed Sale’s final session

Hip No. 472, a yearling son of Elusive Quality consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, was sold to de Meric Stables, Agent for $70,000 to top the Open Session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 Winter Mixed Sale. The bay colt is out of Paoletta, by Medaglia d’Oro, a daughter of champion Val Gardena (CHI).

Hip No. 675, a yearling son of Laoban consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, was purchased by T & R Holdings for $47,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of D Prairie Cat, by D’wildcat, a half sister to grade one winner Emma’s Encore.

Two horses were purchased out of the Summerfield consignment for $40,000 each.

Hip No. 468, Scoot On By, a 14-year-old gray or roan mare by Catienus in foal to Palace, went to H & E Ranch. She’s a full sister to stakes winners Lights of Broadway and Kathern’s Cat out of On Broadway, by Rubiano, and the dam of stakes winning OBS graduate Woman At the Well, winner of the Bold Ego Handicap on January 6th.

Hip No. 548, a yearling daughter of Uncaptured, was sold to Shooting Star Thoroughbreds. The chestnut filly is out of Striking T, by Smart Strike, and is a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner You Bought Her.

For the Open session, 228 horses sold for a total of $1,479,800 compared with 205 horses bringing $1,636,900 in 2018. The average price was $6,490 compared with $7,985 last year, while the median price was $4,000 up from $3,500 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 15.2%; it was 24.9% in 2018.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 106 horses sold for a total of $1,777,100, compared with 147 horses grossing $3,452,700 in 2018. The average price was $16,765 compared with $23,488 a year ago, while the median price was $12,000, up from $10,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 26.9% it was 29.7% last year.

For the Horses of Racing Age session, 65 horses grossed $1,241,000 compared with 57 selling for a total of $880,000 in 2018. The average was $19,092, up from $15,439 a year ago, while the median price was $9,000, identical to last year. The buyback percentage was 14.5%; it was 9.5% in 2018.

For the entire Winter Mixed Sale, 399 horses sold for a total of $4,497,900, compared to 409 horses bringing $5,969,600 last year. The average was $11,273, compared with $14,596 in 2018 while the median price was $6,000, unchanged from a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.6%; it was 24.9% in 2018.

The overall sale topper was Hip No. 251, Golden Notion, a 3-year-old son of OBS graduate Goldencents consigned by Woodside Ranch, Agent, sold to S B M Training and Sales, Agent, for $200,000 to top the Horses of Racing Age Section. The bay colt, who worked a half mile in :44 flat at the Under Tack Show, is out of stakes placed Angels Trace, by Bellamy Road.

Golden Notion tops OBS Winter Mixed Sale’s first session

Hip No. 251, Golden Notion, a 3-year-old son of OBS graduate Goldencents consigned by Woodside Ranch, Agent, was sold to S B M Training and Sales, Agent, for $200,000 to top the first day of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 Winter Mixed Sale. The bay colt, who worked a half mile in :44 flat at the Under Tack Show, is out of stakes placed Angels Trace, by Bellamy Road.

Hip No. 198, Noble Commander, a 4-year-old stakes winning son of Forestry consigned by Moonshadow Farm, Agent, went to Agave Racing Stable for $135,000. The bay colt, who breezed three eighths in :33 flat at the Under Tack Show is out of Indian Carlie, by Indian Charlie, a half sister to grade one winner Marley’s Freedom. He was a front running winner of the Woochopper Stakes at Fair Grounds on December 29th and has earned $143,843 to date.

Hip No. 194, Grand Royale, a 3-year-old gray or roan colt by Cairo Prince, consigned by James Layden, Agent, was sold to Zach Madden for Ron Paolucci for $75,000. Out of Helluva Hangover, by Grand Slam, from the family of grade one winner Hardest Core, he turned in the Under Tack Show’s fastest three eighths, stopping the timer in :32 1/5.

Hip No. 240, Change Direction, a 3-year-old son of Curlin, was purchased by Peach Tree Stables for $60,000. Consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, the dark bay or brown colt is out of Switched Up, by Pleasantly Perfect, a daughter of graded stakes winner Antoinette.

Hip No. 282, Dixieincandyland, consigned by Wes Carter, Agent, was sold to Eddie Kenneally, Agent, for $60,000. The dark bay or brown 3-year-old Candy Ride (ARG) filly, who turned in three eighths in :32 4/5, is out of Dixieinyankeeland, by Dixie Union, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner Descapate.

For the Horses of Racing Age session, 62 horses grossed $1,204,000 compared with 57 selling for a total of $880,000 in 2018. The average was $19,419, up from $15,439 a year ago, while the median price was $8,500 compared to $9,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 17.3%; it was 9.5% in 2018.

Three horses brought $75,000 to share honors topping the Consignor Preferred Section.

Hip No. 28, a yearling son of Distorted Humor consigned by Select Sales, Agent, went to First Finds for $75,000. The chestnut colt is out of Inspeight of Us, by Speightstown, a half sister to grade one winner Daddy’s Lil Darling.

Hip No. 31, a yearling colt by Bayern was purchased by Brookstone Farm for $75,000. Consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent for Highclere, the dark bay or brown colt is a half brother to grade one winning millionaire Jeranimo out of stakes winner Jera, by Jeblar,

Hip No. 70, a yearling colt by Bernardini also consigned by Select Sales, Agent, was sold for $75,000 to Calumet Farm. The bay colt is out of graded stakes winner Palanka City, by Carson City.

Hip No. 148, a yearling colt by Cairo Prince consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, went to de Meric Sales, Agent for Backstretch Farm, for $60,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Broad Miss, by Include, a daughter of graded stakes winner Miss Legality.

  • Hip No. 207, Ambush to Zipzag, also consigned by Wes Carter, Agent, is a dark bay or brown 3-year-old colt by Verrazano out of Little Green Light, by Smarty Jones, a half sister to graded stakes winner Too Much Bling.
  • Hip No. 220 is G a Lemon, consigned by Craig L. Wheeler, Agent, a 3-year-old chestnut colt by Lemon Drop Kid out of Pieria, by Atticus, and a half brother to graded stakes placed stakes winner Kroy.

The Under Tack Show for the Horses of Racing Age Section of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 Winter Mixed Sale is set for Monday, January 28th at 10:00 a.m.

There are 117 horses cataloged in the Racing Age section, with Hip No.’s 187 – 286 in the regular Winter Mixed Sale catalog. A printed supplemental catalog, Hip No’s 287 – 303, is now available at the sales grounds. The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS, Blood-Horse, DRF and TDN websites.

The Horses of Racing Age catalog features a mix of experienced race horses and promising young horses, highlighted by Hip No. 198, Noble Commander, consigned by Moonshadow Farm, Agent, a front running winner of the Woodchopper Stakes at Fair Grounds on December 29th. The 4-year-old colt by Forestry, winner of the OBS Sophomore Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs last March, has earned $143,843 to date.

Winter Mixed Horses of Racing Age Supplemental Catalog now online

The supplemental catalog to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 Winter Mixed Sale is now available on the company’s website at obssales.com.

Seventeen horses have been supplemented to the Horses of Racing Age Session as Hip No.’s 287 – 303. There are now 117 horses in the Racing Age Session, cataloged as Hip No.’s 187 – 303. The Session will begin immediately following the Preferred Session (Hip Numbers 1 – 186), which gets underway at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 29th. The 339 horses cataloged in the Open Session (Hip No.’s 351 – 689) will be sold Wednesday, January 30th, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The Racing Age section’s optional Under Tack Show is scheduled for Monday, January 28th at 10:00 a.m.

The supplemental catalog will be available in print at the sales grounds.

Several of the horses in the Racing Age section have had notable updates since the catalog was printed.

2018 OBS Day of Racing starts Tuesday at noon

Live racing returns to Ocala on Tuesday, November 20th with a ten-race card highlighted by a pair of six furlong $125,000 OBS Sprint Stakes. First post is at 12:00 noon, and there will be pari-mutuel wagering on the card’s first eight races. The races will be streamed live on the OBS website at obssales.com. Admission and parking are free and the gates will open at 10:00 a.m.

The first six are races for Quarter Horses at distances of 220, 330 and 440 yards. The seventh race is a six furlong dash for Thoroughbred Maidens and the eighth is a six furlong Thoroughbred Starter Allowance.

Races nine and ten are non-wagering events. The ninth race is the $125,000 OBS Filly and Mare Sprint, to be run at six furlongs for fillies and mares, three and up, which have gone through the ring at an OBS Sale.

Winds of Change Racing Stable’s graded stakes winning Rich Mommy gets top billing in the field of eight, bringing earnings of $244,185 into the race. Victor Barboza, Jr. trains the 4-year-old daughter of Algorithms, winner of Gulftream’s Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3), and Emisael Jaramillo will ride.

Trainer Mark Casse brings a pair of Gary Barber-owned graded stakes winners to the field of thirteen, with rider Tyler Gaffalione named on both horses.

Conquest Panthera, winner of the Woodbine Mile (G1) last year, is the leading earner in the field with a $355,275 bankroll. The 6-year-old gelding by Kitten’s Joy, who will carry 121 pounds, was also on the board in a pair of graded stakes in 2018.

Lookin To Strike comes into the race off a victory in the Ontario Derby (G3) at Woodbine in October. The 3-year-old son of Lookin At Lucky, with $147,644 in earnings, will carry 120 pounds.

City Zip colt tops Open Yearling Sale finale

Hip No.  677, a son of City Zip consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, was sold for $95,000 to Tracy Farmer to top the second and final Open session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 October Yearling Sale. The dark bay or brown colt, out of Prettyatthetable, by Point Given, is a half brother to graded stakes winning OBS Yearling Sale graduate Pomeroy’s Pistol.

Hip No. 648, a chestnut colt by Giant Surprise consigned by Kelli Mitchell, Agent, went to Bladen Bloodstock for $75,000. He’s out of stakes placed No Mo Magic, by Mo Mon, a half sister to stakes winner At the Disco.

Hip No. 565, a daughter of Uncaptured also consigned by Summerfield, was sold to S G V Thoroughbreds LLC for $72,000. The bay filly is out of Jim’s Lonesa, by Put It Back, a half sister to stakes winner Who What Win.

Summerfield also consigned Hip No. 603, a son of Kantharos purchased by W.D. North Thoroughbreds LLC for $72,000. The bay colt is out of Luca’s Lady, by Hold Me Back, a half sister to stakes placed Jet Majesty.

Champion Equine LLC paid $72,000 for Hip No. 756, a son of Central Banker consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent. The bay colt is out of stakes placed Spirit of Rose, by City Zip.

Hip No. 614, a chestnut colt by Kitten’s Joy consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, went to de Meric Stables, Agent, for $70,000. He’s out of Mayakoba, by War Chant, a half sister to graded stakes winner Juniper Pass.

For the session, 142 yearlings sold for a total of $1,845,400, averaging $12,996 with a $7,500 median figure. The buyback percentage was 25.6%.

For the two Open sessions, 294 horses sold for a total of $3,870,250, compared with 291 horses selling for a total of $3,126,100 in a single session a year ago. The average was $13,164, up 22.5%, compared with $10,743 in 2017 while the median was rose to $7,000 compared to $5,000 last year.  The buyback percentage was 24%; it was 23.4% in 2017.

At Tuesday’s Selected session, 139 horses sold for a total of $5,698,000 compared with 115 yearlings bringing $4,959,400 at the 2017 Selected Sale. The average price was $40,993, compared with $43,125 last year, while the median was $28,000 compared with $30,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 25.3%; it was 33.9% a year ago. Nine horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with six a year ago.

The sale topper was Hip No. 138, a son of Cairo Prince consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, sold to John C. Oxley for an OBS Yearling Sale record $340,000. The gray or roan colt is out of Minutia, by Concord Point, a half sister to stakes winner Mykindasaint. The price bettered the previous mark of $335,000.

The next item on the OBS agenda is the 2018 OBS Day of Racing, set for Tuesday, November 20. The next sale is the 2019 Winter Mixed Sale, including the Horses of Racing Age section, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, January 29 – 30.

Kantharos colt tops Open Yearling Sale’s opening session

Hip No. 516, Our Time, a chestnut colt by Kantharos consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, went to Stonestreet Stables LLC for $190,000 to top the first Open session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 October Yearling Sale. He’s out of Golden Trumpet, by Formal Gold, from the family of grade one winner Wilderness Song.

Hip No. 311, a son of Kitten’s Joy consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, was purchased by Ann Maher-Springman, Agent for Rashed Yousef Bouresly, for $100,000. The dark bay or brown colt, a full brother to stakes winner Kuwait Currency, is out of Thebignbadestbunny, by Smart Strike.

Hip No. 341, a son of Mark Valeski consigned by Magnolia Point Thoroughbreds, Agent, went to Tracy Farmer for $85,000. Out of Vindi Princess, by Vindication, the bay colt is a half brother to stakes winner Big Drink of Water, who picked up his third stakes win in the Fitz Dixon, Jr. Memorial Stakes at Presque Isle last Thursday.

Smokey Willow Farm paid $80,000 for Hip No. 458, a son of Cairo Prince consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Day of Obligation, by Deputy Minister, from the family of grade one stakes winner Confessional.

Hip No. 489, a son of The Big Beast consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, went to S G V Thoroughbreds LLC for $70,000. The bay colt is out of Faith Hall, by High Cotton, a half sister to graded stakes placed Show Me the Bling.

For the session, 143 yearlings sold for a total of $1,967,300, averaging $13,757, with a $7,000 median figure. The buyback percentage was 27%.

The sale continues Thursday at 12:00 noon with Hip No.’s 551 – 789 selling in the second Open session. Record Cairo Prince colt tops Selected Yearling Sale

Hip No. 138, a son of Cairo Prince consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, was sold to John C. Oxley for an OBS Yearling Sale record $340,000 to top the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 Selected Sale of Yearlings. The gray or roan colt is out of Minutia, by Concord Point, a half sister to stakes winner Mykindasaint. The price bettered the previous mark of $335,000.

Stonestreet Stables LLC went to $210,000 for Hip No. 145, a daughter of Uncaptured consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent. The bay filly, a half sister to stakes winner It’s High Time, is out of My Rolex, by Proud Accolade.

Hip No. 128, a son of Commissioner consigned by First Finds, was purchased by de Meric Stables, Agent, for $200,000. The bay colt is out of stakes winner Lunarlady, by Yes It’s True, a half sister to graded stakes winners Lunarpal and Astrology.

De Meric Stables, Agent for Backstretch Farm, purchased Hip No. 177, a bay filly by Into Mischief, for $170,000. Consigned by Select Sales, Agent, she’s out of She’s a Rainbow, by Giant’s Causeway, a daughter of stakes placed Rainbow’s Song.

Hip No. 36, a son of Kitten’s Joy consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, also went to de Meric Sales, Agent, for $150,000. The dark bay or brown colt, out of Blue Grass Music, by Bluegrass Cat, is a full brother to Henley’s Joy, winner of the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes on September 1st and second by a nose this past Saturday in Keeneland’s Bourbon Stakes (G3).

H. H., Agent, went to $140,000 for Hip No. 69, a daughter of Take Charge Indy consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Divine Heart, by Divine Park, a half sister to grade one stakes winners Include Me Out and Check the Label.

Hip No. 192, a daughter of American Pharoah consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent, was purchased by First Stop Stable for $130,000. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Toast to Ashley, by First Defence, a half sister to stakes placed Moka Jumbie.

Calumet Farm paid $115,000 for Hip No 195, a son of Lemon Drop Kid also consigned by Taylor Made. The bay colt is out of You Hear Us Coming, by Stormy Atlantic, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Quiet Meadow.

Hip No. 153, a son of Kantharos consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, was sold to Tracy Farmer for $100,000. The chestnut colt is a half brother to stakes placed J Isle out of Orchid Isle, by Zamindar.

For the day, 124 horses sold for a total of $5,464,000 compared with 115 yearlings bringing $4,959,400 at the 2017 Selected Sale. The average price was $44,065, up 2.2% compared with $43,425 last year, while the median was $30,000, identical to last year’s figure. The buyback percentage was 33.3%; it was 33.9% a year ago. Nine horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with six a year ago.

October Yearling Sale begins Tuesday, October 9th

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 October Yearling Sale begins Tuesday, October 9th. There are 702 yearlings cataloged for the three-day sale, which gets underway at 12:00 noon with 213 horses offered in the Selected session.

The sale continues with Open sessions on Wednesday, October 10th and Thursday, October 11th, beginning at 12:00 noon on both days. Hip No.’s 301 -550 will sell on Wednesday and Hip No.’s 551 – 789 will be offered on Thursday.

Thirty-five yearlings were supplemented to the sale after the catalog was printed in September. Twenty-three horses (Hip No’s 191 – 213) were added to the Selected session and twelve (Hip No’s 778 – 789) to the Open session. Their catalog pages are available via the OBS website at obssales.com and in printed form at the sales grounds.

Walking videos of many of the Selected yearlings may be viewed through the Sortable Master Index on the OBS website. The sortable master index provides searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed. Advanced search and filter capability has been added to allow shortlist creation. A link to instructions for using the new features can be found in the index header and a step by step tutorial is available in the index as well. There are several notable recent updates since the catalog was printed. Hip No. 36, a colt by Kitten’s Joy, has a newly minted stakes winning full brother in Henley’s Joy, who captured the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes on September 1st and was second by a nose this afternoon in Keeneland’s Bourbon Stakes (G3).

Hip No. 39, a Central Banker filly, is a full sister to OBS graduate Sassy Agnes, winner of the Lady Finger Stakes on September 8th.

OBS Yearling Sale graduates in the headlines recently include Uriah St. Lewis’ Discreet Lover, who shocked the racing world with an upset victory in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park. The 5-year-old Florida-bred son of Repent picked up his second graded stakes win and became the newest millionaire OBS graduate with earnings of $1,354,060. Consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, he went through the ring at the 2014 OBS August Yearling Sale.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC and Bethlehem Stables LLC’s World of Trouble, pictured on the back cover of the catalog, has won three stakes this year. After taking the Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga in August, the 3-year-old graded stakes placed Florida-bred colt by Kantharos took the $100,000 Allied Forces Stakes on the turf at Belmont in September. Now 7-4-1-1 with $333,400 in earnings for trainer Jason Servis, he was consigned by Darsan Inc., Agent, to the 2016 August Yearling Sale.

Kevin Attard and Soli Mehta’s 2014 OBS Yearling Sale graduate Starship Jubilee picked up her third graded stakes win, taking the Canadian Stakes (G2) at Woodbine on September 15. Consigned to the sale by The Acorn, the 5-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Indy Wind, is now 23-11-2-2 and has earned $541,013.

Graduates of the 2017 October Yearling Sale have begun to make their mark, headed by John C. Oxley’s Schuylerville Stakes (G2) winning catalog cover girl Catherinethegreat. The 2-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Uncaptured, consigned by Turtle Pond Farm, topped the 2017 OBS October Open Sale of Yearlings, purchased for $170,000. Trained by Mark Casse, she has earned $138,939 to date.

Mr. Oxley’s graded stakes placed Strike Silver, sold by Kaizen Sales for a Selected Sales topping $275,000, came from dead last turning for home to get up in the last jump and win Keeneland’s Indian Summer Stakes by a neck this afternoon. The victory earned a trip to the Breeders’ Cup for the Mark Casse trainee, who is now 3-2-1-0 and has earned $180,600.

Charles L. Biggs’ Congrats Gal is graded stakes placed; Dale Hagedorn’s Mr Wrench It is a stakes winner and Gary Barber’s Eyeinthesky, Wayne W. Rice’s Dalliance and Hernandez Racing Club’s Mozo Bello are already stakes placed.

October Yearling Sale supplemental catalog now online

The supplemental catalog to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 October Yearling Sale is now available on the company’s website at obssales.com.

Twenty-three yearlings have been supplemented to the Selected Yearling Sale as Hip No.’s 191 – 213. Ten yearlings have been supplemented to the Open Yearling Sale, cataloged as Hip No.’s 778 – 787.

The supplemental catalog will be available in print at the sales grounds.

There are now 213 yearlings cataloged for the Selected Yearling Sale. Scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th, it will begin at 12:00 noon. Walking videos of the Selected yearlings will be available on the website and the iPad version beginning later this week There are now 487 yearlings cataloged in the Open Yearling Sale, set for Wednesday, October 10th and Thursday, October 11th. Both Open sessions will begin at 12:00 noon.

OBS Sprint Stakes headlines live racing on November 20th

Live racing returns to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company on Tuesday, November 20th. Two sprint stakes for OBS sale graduates headline the day and will be open to older horses. Free nominations to both races close on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. The new position on the calendar provides horsemen a stakes opportunity before the kickoff of the Gulfstream Park Championship and the Tampa Bay Downs meets.

The stakes races will be run over six furlongs with a guaranteed purse of $125,000 and restricted to OBS graduates. The OBS Sprint and the OBS Filly and Mare Sprint are for three years old and upward. Entries will be taken on Tuesday, November 13th. Both races will be run as non-wagering events.

All starters finishing fifth through last will earn $5,000. Supplementary nominations of $500 may be made at time of entry for those horses missing the free nomination deadline. There is a fee of $1,250 to enter and $2,500 to start. Nomination forms and the condition book may be found in the OBS website at: 2018 OBS Sprint Stakes

There will be pari-mutuel wagering available on eight races, featuring quarter horse races for two year olds as well as for three years old and upward at distances from 220 yards to 440 yards. Up to four thoroughbred maiden and starter allowance races may be used as substitute races. Purses range from $4,000 to $7,000 with all starters guaranteed a minimum of $200.
