$1.7-million March Sale topper Diamondsandpearls romps in debut at Santa Anita

Phoenix Thoroughbred III, Ltd.’s Diamondsandpearls, who brought $1.7-million to top the 2017 OBS March Sale, took the lead at the start of a $54,345 maiden special weight test at Santa Anita on Sunday and gave nothing else a chance, romping to a seven length victory in her debut for trainer Bob Baffert. The 2-year-old daughter of Congrats was consigned to the March Sale by McKathan Bros., Agent, and sold to Kerri Radcliffe, Agent. Hip No. 631, daughter of Astrology consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, went to Whisper Hill Farm LLC for $300,000 to top the second and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2017 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age. The bay filly, whose quarter in :20 4/5 was the fastest at the distance at Saturday’s Under Tack session, is out of Dreamingly, by Giant’s Causeway, a half sister to stakes placed Skyfall.

Linda Rice, Agent, went to $220,000 for Hip No. 634, a bay colt by Flat Out consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent. Out of Dress Parade, by Victory Gallop, a daughter of graded stakes winner Added Asset, he turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat on Saturday.

Hip No. 410, a son of Stay Thirsty consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, was sold to Steven W. Young, Agent for $190,000.  The gray or roan colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session, is out of Sweetest Song, by Unbridled’s Song, from the family of graded stakes winner Ifyoucouldseemenow.

Hip No. 744, a bay filly by Soldat consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent was purchased by Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, for $175,000. Out of graded stakes winner Storm Mesa, by Sky Mesa, she breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Saturday.

Hip No. 731, a son of Tapit consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Tim Kegel, Agent, for $170,000. The chestnut colt, who worked an eighth in :10 2/5 on Saturday, is a full brother to grade one stakes winner Pretty City Dancer out of Pretty City, by Carson City.

Hip No. 766, a son of Speightstown consigned by RiceHorse Stable (Brandon & Ali Rice), went to K.O.I.D. Co., Ltd. for $150,000. The chestnut colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Saturday, is out of graded stakes placed Exit to Heaven, by Holy Bull.

Rialto Racing Stables went to $145,000 for Hip No. 460, a chestnut colt by Flatter who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 on Friday. Consigned by consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, he’s out of Up in Lights, by Smart Strike, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Lady of the Future.

Hip No. 465, a son of Quality Road consigned by Randy Miles, Agent, went to Kirkwood, Agent for David Berman for $130,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Friday, is out of Villanella, by War Chant, from the family of grade one winner Passion for Gold and a half sister to stakes placed Alcomatch.

Hip No. 582, a gray or roan colt by Tapit consigned by Hoby & Layna Kight, was purchased for $130,000 by K.O.I.D. Co., Ltd. The half brother to grade one stakes winner Cuvee, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Saturday, is out of Christmas Star, by Star de Naskra.

Dennis O’Neill paid $130,000 for Hip No. 657, a chestnut filly by Line of David consigned by Shadybrook Farm, Inc. The half sister to stakes winner Temple Fur, out of Fashion Fur, by Mr. Greeley, worked an eighth in :10 flat on Saturday.

Kirkwood, Agent for David Berman, went to $120,000 for Hip No. 528, a chestnut colt by Tapit who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :21 3/5 on Friday. Consigned by Harris Training Center LLC, Agent, he’s out of Avid, by More Than Ready, a half sister to graded stakes winner Star Dabbler.

Hip No. 760, a daughter of Super Saver consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, was sold to Larry C Brookshire for $120,000.  The bay filly, who breezed an eighth in 10: flat on Saturday, is out of Circumspect, by Discreet Cat, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Monba.

For the session, 207 youngsters sold for a total of $7,646,400, compared with 156 two-year-olds grossing $4,699,900 at the corresponding session last year. The average price was $36,939, compared with $30,128 a year ago while the median price was $20,000 compared with $15,000 in 2016. The buyback percentage was 21.6%; it was 22.8% in 2016.

For the entire sale, 424 two-year-olds sold for $15,216,900 compared with 619 bringing a total of $17,930,900 last year in four sessions. The average was $35,889 up 23.9% from $28,968 in 2016, while the median price was $19,000 up 40.7% compared with $13,500 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.8%; it was 24.3% a year ago.

Hip No. 317, a son of Twirling Candy consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was purchased for $310,000 by Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent. Hip No. 105, a gray or roan filly by Tapit consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was purchased by Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, for $180,000. Out of graded stakes placed stakes winner La Nez, by Storm Creek, she sped an quarter  in :21 1/5 last Wednesday.

Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent paid $150,000 for Hip No. 90, a daughter of City Zip out of stakes winner Karakorum Elektra by Freud. The bay filly, who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 on Wednesday, is consigned by Hoppel’s Horse & Cattle Co., Inc., Agent.

For the session, 199 horses grossed $7,217,500, compared with 147 selling for a total of $3,645,000 at last year’s first session. The average was $36,269, rising 46.3% compared with $24,798 a year ago, while the median price was $18,000, up 33.3% compared to $13,500 in 2016.  The buyback percentage was 22.9%;  it was 30.1% last year.

June Sale begins on Tuesday

The 2017 OBS June Sale of Two Year Olds and Horses of Racing Age begins on Tuesday, June 13th and continues through Wednesday, June 14th.  There are 755 two-year-olds and 12 older horses cataloged; both sessions will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-374 will sell on Tuesday, and the Wednesday session (Hip No.’s 375-769) includes the 12 older horses (Hip No.’s 690-701).

The catalog is available online via the OBS website. A sortable master index provides searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed.  The 73 horses supplemented to the sale can be found online on the OBS website and in printed form at the sales groumds.

The iPad version of the catalog can be accessed via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The App allows users to download and view the catalog and Under Tack videos, receive updates and results, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capability. American Anthem, War Story score in graded stakes at Belmont

China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners LLC, SF Racing LLC et al’s American Anthem surged to the front at the head of the stretch of Belmont’s $500,000 Woody Stephens Stakes (G2), opened a big lead in mid-stretch and coasted home to a 3-1/4 length victory over fellow OBS graduate Giuseppe the Great (March ’16).  It’s the second straight graded stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Bodemeister, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show before he was purchased for $435,000 out of the Hoppel’s Horse & Cattle Co. consignment at the 2016 OBS March Sale. Loooch Racing Stables, Inc., Glenn K. Ellis and Imaginary Stables’ War Story is the newest OBS millionaire after stalking the leaders in the early going of Belmont’s $400,000 Brooklyn Invitational Stakes (G2), taking command inside the eighth pole and drawing  away to 2-1/2 length victory. It’s the first graded stakes win for the 5-year-old gelding by Northern Afleet, trained by Jorge Navarro, now 21-5-3-3 with $1,154,305 in earnings. Shaqab Racing, WinStar Farm LLC and China Horse Club’s OBS Championship Stakes winner Master Plan rallied from off the pace to catch fellow OBS graduate Adonis Creed (April ’16) in the stretch of Saturday’s $50,125 Stanton Stakes at Delaware Park and beat him by a length and a quarter. Super Dude (March ’16) checked in third to complete an OBS sweep of the race. It’s the second stakes win for the 3-year-old graded stakes placed colt by Twirling Candy, trained by Todd Pletcher, now 7-3-1-1 with earnings of $333,490. June Sale Under Tack Show begins Wednesday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2017 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age begins Wednesday, June 7th and continues through Saturday, June 10th.  All four sessions begin at 7:30 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1 – 200 will breeze on Wednesday, Hip No.’s 201 – 400 go on Thursday, Hip No.’s 401 – 600 will work on Friday, and Hip No.’s 601 – 769 will breeze on Saturday. The final session includes five older horses and 68 two-year-olds horses in the supplemental catalog, which can be viewed on the OBS website and via the equineline Sales Catalog iPad App. Printed supplemental catalogs are available at the sales grounds.

There are 755 two-year-olds and 12 older horses cataloged for the two-day sale, set for Tuesday June 13th and Wednesday, June 14th, with both sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m.

June graduates in the headlines recently include Rockingham Ranch’s Stormy Liberal, who scored his fourth straight stakes win in the $147,000 Daytona Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita on May 27th. That same afternoon at Santa Anita, Holly and David Wilson’s Follow Me Crev was a fast closing second in the Gold Cup (G1). This past weekend, Ballybritt Stable LLC’s Dynatail captured the $200,000 Penn Oaks.  It’s the second stakes win for the 3-year-old daughter of Hightail, winner of the OBS Championship Stakes in January. She was consigned to the 2016 June Sale by Hoppel’s Horse & Cattle Co., Agent, and purchased by Ballybritt for $5,000 after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 4/5. watch her under tack video

As always, the sale and Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com, and also via the Blood-Horse and DRF websites. The works will be available on DVD and on the OBS website, as well as in the video room adjacent to the Horsemen’s Lounge and at kiosks in the breezeway and covered walking ring areas.  In-room viewing is available at The Courtyard by Marriott, Holiday Inn, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton.

Current information about OBS sales, consignors and graduates is now also available via social media sites Facebook and Twitter. A link on the homepage directs users to either site.

Sales results will be available on the OBS website, updated frequently during each session of the June Sale.  In addition, the latest news regarding OBS graduates, Under Tack set lists, sales schedules, nominations, credit requests, travel information and other news relevant to OBS consignors and customers is also available.
