Ashbrook Farm and Upland Flats Racing’s Red Carpet Ready got the Derby weekend off to a rousing start on Friday, taking Churchill’s $500,000 Eight Belles Stakes (G2). Tracking the leaders down the backstretch, the 3-year-old daughter of Oscar Performance ran past odds-on favorite Munnys Gold turning for home, then gamely held off a late run by the favorite and was best by a head. To date, she has captured a pair of graded stakes, compiled a 5-4-0-1 record and earned $588,670, trained by Rusty Arnold. Gary Barber’s Join the Dance went straight to the lead in Sunday’s $75,000 Monroe Stakes at Gulfstream and was never headed en route to a 1-1/2 length victory.
