Cabo Spirit, Speaking Scout one-two in Santa Anita’s Twilight Derby

Kretz Racing LLC’s Cabo Spirit saved ground early in Saturday’s $201,500 Twilight Derby (G2) at Santa Anita, waited for room to launch his rally in the stretch and was best by half a length at the wire, with fellow OBS graduate Speaking Scout (October ’20) finishing second. It’s the second graded stakes win for the 3-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile, trained by George Papaprodromou, now 15-4-3-3 with $438,560 in earnings. Gatsas Stables, R. A. Hill Stable and Steven Schoenfeld’s Freedom Trail is two for two and a stakes winner after coming around horses in Aqueduct’s $120,000 Awad Stakes on Saturday, taking over inside the final sixteenth and scoring by three quarters of a length. The 2-year-old son of OBS graduate Collected, his sire’s first stakes winner, was purchased for $150,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2022 OBS Spring Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Peter Searles and Patty Searles’ City Man overcame early traffic trouble in Sunday’s $200,000 Mohawk Stakes at Aqueduct, found room inside to reach contention at the head of the stretch, took command a furlong out and drew away to win by 2-1/2 lengths. It’s the second straight stakes victory for the graded stakes winning 5-year-old son of Mucho Macho Man, sold to Reeves Thoroughbreds for $185,000 by Off the Hook LLC, Agent, at the 2019 OBS Spring Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Patricia’s Hope LLC’s unbeaten Back to Ohio is five for five with four stakes wins after romping to a 7-1/4 length victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Best of Ohio John W. Galbreath Stakes at Mahoning Valley Race Course. Trained by Larry Rivelli, the 2-year-old daughter of Midshipman has earned $245,700 to date.
