OBS grads score seven weekend stakes wins

While Spring Sale graduate Country Grammer was overseas winning the Dubai World Cup (G1) on Saturday, OBS grads were winning seven more stakes races all over the country.

On Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, OBS grads scored in four of the six stakes at the Oldsmar track’s annual Florida Cup Day.

David Melin, Leon Ellman and Laurie Plesa’s King Cab went right to the lead, set a rapid pace and was never headed en route to a 4-3/4 length victory in the $110,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Sophomore Stakes, with fellow OBS graduates Lightening Larry (March ’21) and Cattin (January ’20) finishing second and third. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Noble Bird, trained by Eddie Plesa, now 5-3-0-0 with $141,940 in earnings. Mathis Stable LLC’s Treasure King is two for two and a stakes winner after coming from off the pace and getting up in the final yards and to take the $100,000 Equistaff Sophomore Turf Stakes by three quarters of a length. The 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Treasure Beach (GB) was consigned to the 2021 OBS June Sale by Hidden Brook, Agent for Patricia Generazio, and sold for $75,000 to Steven W. Young, Agent, after breezing an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. Trained by Todd Pletcher, he has earned $93,900 to date. watch his under tack video   June Sale walking video

Gatsas Stables, R. A. Hill Stable and Steven Schoenfeld’s lightly raced Midnight Stroll led a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $100,000 Stonehedge Farm South Sophomore Fillies Stakes, leading from gate to wire and scoring by 3-1/4 lengths over Rapturous (April ’21) with Outfoxed (April ’21, October ’20) checking in third. It’s the second straight win for the 3-year-old Florid-bred filly by Not This Time, trained by John Terranova, now 4-2-0-0 with $83,225 in earnings. The two-time OBS graduate went through the ring at the 2020 Winter Mixed Sale before she was purchased for $225,000 out of the Abbie Road Farm consignment at the 2020 October Selected Yearling Sale. Elizabeth L. Dobles and Imaginary Stables’ Pudding scored his first stakes win in the $100,000 NYRABETS Sprint Stakes, on the pace all the way and proving best by a neck after a stretch-long battle. The 7-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Two Step Salsa is a two-time OBS graduate, going through the ring at the 2016 Winer Mixed Sale and then sold for $10,000 by Beth Bayer, Agent, at the 2016 August Yearling Sale. Trained by Elizabeth L. Dobles, he’s now 33-9-7-8 and earned $323,840.

Monarch Stables Inc.’s Last Leaf saved ground early in Saturday’s $75,000 Melody of Colors Stakes at Gulfstream, came out for the drive,  then slipped back to the rail and caught fellow OBS graduate American Starlet (April ’21) late and beat her by half a length. It’s the second stakes score for the 3-year-old graded stakes placed daughter of Not This Time, now 11-4-1-2 with $180,675 in earnings for trainer Ron Spatz. A two-time OBS graduate, she was sold by Sharon Biamonte, Agent, at the 2020 Winter Mixed Sale and then purchased for $23,500 out of the Kaizen Sales consignment at the 2020 October Yearling Sale. David A. Bernsen, LLC, Exline-Border Racing LLC, Steve Dorfman and Richard Hausman’s Sharapova stalked the pace in Sunday’s $100,000 Harry Henson Stakes at Sunland Park, wore down the leaders to take over a sixteenth from home and scored by a length. It’s the stakes debut for the 4-year-old daughter of Outwork, purchased for $130,000 out of the Rod McVey consignment at the 2020 OS June Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. OBS 2021 Spring Sale grads were one-two in Saturday’s $75,000 Crescent City Derby at Fair Grounds. Delanie J. Calais, Jr.’s Cosmic Train trailed in the early going, but rallied on the turn, took over from fellow graduate More Memories a sixteenth from home and was best by a head at the wire. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old son of OBS graduate Klimt, now 4-3-0-0 with $105,390 earnings for trainer Jerry Delhomme.
