Four OBS graduates named Eclipse Award finalists

Four OBS graduates are finalists for 2021 Eclipse Awards.

Speedway Stables LLC’s unbeaten Corniche, a finalist in the 2-Year-Old Male division, broke his maiden at first asking at Del Mar then romped to victories in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). The now 3-year-old by Quality Road, trained by Bob Baffert, has earned $1,262,000 to date. Zedan Racing Stables Inc.’s Medina Spirit is a finalist in the 3-Year-Old Male category after a memorable campaign in which he won the Kentucky Derby (G1), Awesome Again (G1) and Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3). He also was second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1), San Felipe (G2) and Sham Stakes (G3). He’s a two-time OBS graduate, sold for $1,000 as a yearling by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, on behalf of breeder Gail Rice at the 2019 Winter Mixed Sale, then purchased for $35,000 by Gary Young on behalf of Zedan Racing Stables out of the Whitman Sales consignment at the 2020 June Sale after breezing three eighths in :33 flat. Trained by Bob Baffert, he was 10-5-4-1 and earned $3,545,200. watch his under tack video

George Krikorian’s War Like Goddess, a Female Turf finalist, turned in a four-race graded stakes win streak in 2021, taking Gulfstream’s Orchid (G3), Keeneland’s Bewitch (G3) and the Glens Falls (G2) and Flower Bowl (G1) at Saratoga. She ended her 2021 campaign with a game third place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Fillies and Mare Turf (G1). The 4-year-old daughter of English Channel was consigned to the 2019 OBS June Sale by Hemingway Racing and Training Stables, and sold for $30,000 after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. Michael Imperio, Sofia Soares, Vincent S. Scuderi, Gabrielle Farm, Mazel Stable Partners, LLC, Matthew J. Mercurio, Medallion Racing, Parkland Thoroughbreds and Barry Fowler’s Bella Sofia is a finalist in the Female Sprinter category. The 4-year-old filly by Awesome Patriot scored a pair of graded stakes wins, taking Saratoga’s Test (G1) in August and Belmont’s Gallant Bloom (G2) in September before running a good fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1). Purchased for $20,000 out of the Grassroots Training & Sales consignment by Sallusto & Albina, Agent, at the 2020 OBS June Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5 and trained by Rudy Rodriguez, she has compiled a 6-4-1-0 career record and earned $592,600.  watch her under tack video
