OBS grads enjoy holiday weekend from coast to coast and abroad

The upcoming OBS Winter Mixed Sale got a boost on New Year’s Day when Simplification romped to an impressive victory in Gulfstream’s $150,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes. His half brother by Audible is consigned to the sale and sells as Hip No. 167 on Tuesday, January 25th. view the catalog page

OBS grads enjoyed a busy holiday weekend, with coast to coast stakes wins and impressive performances by newcomers.

William Branch’s Carotari took the lead going to the turn in the $100,000 Janus Stakes and kept it to the wire, opening daylight after turning for home and cruising to victory by a length and three quarters. It’s the fifth stakes win for the 6-year-old graded stakes placed gelding by Artie Schiller, trained by Brian Lynch, now 24-8-6-3 with $556,863 in earnings. Consigned to the 2018 April Sale by TIP Thoroughbred Investment Possibilities, Agent, he went through the ring after working an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show.  watch his under tack video

Madaket Stables LLC, Wonder Stables, Tony Weintraub and Tony and Brandon M. Dalinka’s Miss J McKay, fanned wide after circling horses on the turn in the $100,000 Abundantia Stakes, charged to the front a sixteenth from home and scored by a length and a half. It’s the second stakes victory for the lightly raced 5-year-old daughter of Hangover Kid, consigned by Costanzo Sales, Agent, to the 2019 April Sale, where she went through the ring after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5. Two more OBS graduates posted stakes wins at Gulfstream on New Year’s Day.

Winngate Stables LLC’s Kathleen O is two for two and a stakes winner after overcoming a slow start and early traffic trouble to lead a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $100,000 Cash Run Stakes. The newly turned 3-year-old daughter of Upstart circled the leaders on the turn, took command after straightening away and drew off in the stretch to score by 8-1/2 lengths. Mi Negrita (June ’21) settled for second and Fast and Flirty (April ’21) checked in third. Trained by Shug McGaughey, the two time OBS graduate has earned $104,760 to date. Lea Farms, LLC’s Lightening Larry took the lead at the start of the $100,000 Limehouse Stakes, opened it up on the turn and held on gamely to win by half a length. It’s the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old Florida-bred colt by Uncaptured, sold for $50,000 by Pick View LLC, Agent, at the 2021 March Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. OBS grads posted two stakes victories at the Fair Grounds and one at Delta Downs..

Gary Barber’s Bron and Brow ended his juvenile campaign in style, breaking his maiden with his first stakes win and heading a 1-2-3 OBS sweep of the $102,529 Louisiana Futurity on New Year’s Eve.  The now 3-year-old colt by Gormley chased fellow OBS graduate Charco (January ’20) early, took command coming to the quarter pole and drew away in the stretch to best him by 2-3/4 lengths, with Big Scully (October ’20) checking in third. M Bar O LLC’s Elle Z set the pace under pressure in the early going of the $75,000 Nelson J. Menard Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds on New Year’s Day, drew clear after turning for home and cruised to a five length victory. That’s three stakes wins for the 5-year-old daughter of City Zip, trained by Chris Hartman, now 16-7-3-0 with $355,283 earnings. She went through the ring at the 2019 OBS June Sale after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. watch her under tack video

Oak Tree Stables LLC’s Strummer pressed the pace in the $70,000 Lookout Stakes on New Year’s Eve at Delta Downs, took charge in the lane and scored by three lengths. It’s the fourth straight win and first stakes victory for the 4-year-old filly by Star Guitar, purchased for $22,000 out of the Golden Rock Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2020 OBS June Sale. Trained by Scott Gelner, she’s now 9-4-2-0 and has earned $146,620. watch her under tack video 

An OBS grad scored a holiday weekend victory in Australia.

LNJ Foxwoods’ Lighthouse posted her fourth straight win on New Year’s Day, taking the $160,000 Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington Racecourse in Australia. It’s the first Australian stakes win for the 5-year-old graded stakes placed daughter of Mizzen Mast, winner of the Music City Stakes at Kentucky Downs in 2020. At the 2019 OBS April Sale, she breezed an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before she was purchased for $375,000 out of the Randy Miles consignment. Trained by Ciaron Maher & David Eust, she’s now 13-7-2-1 and has earned $531,227. watch her under tack video

A pair of OBS grads wrapped up the holiday weekend with Sunday stakes wins at Santa Anita.

Hronis Racing LLC’s Edgeway was a wire to wire winner of the $77,028 Kalookan Queen Stakes, scoring by a length and three quarters over fellow OBS graduate Merneith (March ’19).  It’s the third stakes win for the 5-year-old daughter of Competitive Edge, sold for $275,000 by Mayberry Farm, Agent, at the 2019 OBS April Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Now 10-6-2-1 for trainer John Sadler, she has earned $596,360 to date.  watch her under tack video

Kretz Racing LLC’s Cabo Spirit saved ground in the early going of the $102,000 Eddie Logan Stakes, came outside to reach contention on the turn, drove to the front in the final furlong and was best by a length and a quarter at the wire. Fellow OBS graduate Handy Dandy (June ’21) settled for third. It’s the first stakes win for the now 3-year-old by Pioneerof the Nile, trained by George Papaprodromou, now 7-2-1-2 with $137,220 in earnings. Michael Lund Petersen’s Flying Drummer was a sharp winner of a maiden special at Santa Anita on New Year’s Eve. The now 3-year-old colt by Gun Runner, trained by Bob Baffert, drew away in the stretch and scored by 5-1/2 lengths. KHK Racing’s Shahama is two for two and a TDN ‘Rising Star’ after a 2-1/2 length victory in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial at Meydan on New Year’s Day. Exline-Border Racing LLC, Richard Hausman, Dan Hudock, and Susanna Wilson’s Queen of Thorns, trained by Peter Eurton, took charge of a maiden special test at Santa Anita in her debut on New Year’s Day shortly after the start and romped home an easy eighth length winner.
