Chris Walsh’s California Angel trailed in the early going of Keeneland’s $200,000 Jessamine Stakes (G2) on Wednesday, but circled horses to reach contention on the turn, closed steadily on the outside down the stretch and was up in the final strides to win by a head. It was the stakes debut for the 2-year-old filly by California Chrome, now 3-2-01 with $213,700 in earnings for trainer George Leonard, III.
