Hidden Connection romps in Churchill’s Pocahontas Stakes

Hidden Brook Farm and Black Type Thoroughbreds’ Hidden Connection is two for two and a graded stakes winner. She was up close early in Saturday’s $299,700 Pocahontas Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, took charge on the turn then drew away down the stretch to a 9-1/4 length victory. The 2-year-old daughter of Connect is a two-time OBS graduate, going through the ring at the 2021 Spring Sale, then purchased for $85,000 out of the Coastal Equine consignment at the 2021 June Sale after breezing an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5. OBS graduates posted a trio of stakes wins on Saturday at Laurel.

Rockingham Ranch and David A Bernsen LLC’S Jalen Journey was awarded victory in the $200,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes (G3) when interfered with in the final sixteenth. It’s the first stakes win for the graded stakes placed 6-year-old Florida-bred son of With Distinction, trained by Steve Asmussen, now 16-8-2-1 with earnings of $503,674. He was sold for $14,000 by Kim Harrison (Top Speed Farm), Agent, at the 2016 OBS August Yearling Sale.

Full of Run Racing, LLC and Madaket Stables LLC’s Dreamalildreamofu tracked the leader in the $100,000 Twixt Stakes, wore her down in the stretch and was up late to score by a head. Fellow OBS graduate Josie (March ’19) checked in third. It’s the second stakes win for the 4-year-old graded stakes placed daughter of Commissioner, a two-time OBS graduate, sold first at the 2018 October Selected Yearling Sale, then purchased for $65,000 out of the Advanced Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2019 June Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show. Team Hanley’s Captain Bombastic moved up on the rail, took the lead going to the turn in the $100,000 Polynesian Stakes and was never headed, hanging on gamely to score by a length. Fellow OBS graduate Phat Man (March ’16) rallied to finish third and was placed second via disqualification. It’s the fourth stakes win for the 4-year-old Forty Tales colt, trained by Steve Asmussen, now 14-5-2-2 with earnings of $486,800. Consigned to the 2019 OBS March Sale by Sequel Bloodstock, Agent for Chester & Mary Broman, he was sold for $80,000 after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. watch his under tack video

Gentry Farms’ (A.P. Gentry) Eldon’s Prince scored his second straight stakes victory on Saturday at Gulfstream, relaxing off the pace in the early going, then turning in a strong stretch drive to prove best by a head in the $75,000 Armed Forces Stakes. Now 3-2-1-0 for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., he has earned $99,675. KAM Racing Stables’ Manhattan Up took Sunday’s $100,000 Los Alamitos Special Stakes, coming from just off the pace and easing away late to win by a length and a half, with fellow OBS graduate Bold Endeavor (April ’18) settling for third.   It’s the first stakes score for the 5-year-old graded stakes placed son of Street Boss, purchased for $52,000 out of the Grassroots Training & sales consignment at the 2018 OBS Spring Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 3/5. D. J. Stable LLC’s Diamond City picked a nice spot to break his maiden, taking charge of Woodbine’s $130,750 Ontario Racing Stakes a furlong out and winning by a length and three quarters. Third in his first two starts, the 2-year-old colt by Shackleford, trained by Mark Casse, has earned $71,341.
