Six weekend stakes wins for OBS grads

Thoroughbred Champions Training Center LLC’s Gladiator King set the pace in Saturday’s $75,000 Roar Stakes at Gulfstream, shook loose in mid-stretch, then held off a strong late charge to win by a nose. It’s the third stakes victory for the 3-year-old graded stakes winning colt by Curlin, trained by Jaime Mejia, now 13-5-1-1 with $216,535 in earnings. Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC, Darsan, Inc., Bethlehem Stables LLC and David Simon’s A Bit of Both took the lead at the start of Gulfstream’s $75,000 Game Face Stakes on Saturday and never looked back, opening up daylight in the stretch and winning by three lengths.  It’s the third straight win and first stakes score for the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly Paynter, sold by breeder Darsan, Inc. for $10,000 at the 2017 OBS October Selected Yearling Sale. She’s now 5-4-1-0 for trainer Jason Servis and has earned $136,610.  Selected Sale conformation photo

Alex and JoAnn Lieblong’s Bye Bye J moved wide to the leaders on the turn in Saturday’s $100,000 Rainbow Miss Stakes at Oaklawn Park, took charge after straightening away in the stretch and eased away to win by a length and three quarters. It’s the second stakes victory for the 3-year-old graded stakes placed daughter of Uncaptured, sold for $21,000 by Perrone Sales, Ltd., Agent for McDowell Farm, at the 2017 OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Trained by Ron Moquett, she’s now 7-4-1-1 and has earned $221,605 to date.

2018 OBS April graduates took both divisions of the New York Stallion Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday.

Beach Haven Thoroughbreds LLC’s Newly Minted is two for two and a stakes winner after going head to head for the lead early in the $200,000 New York Stallion Stakes for fillies, putting away her rival on the turn and drawing away down the stretch to a 7-1/2 length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Bangle Gal (March ’18) checked in third. The 3-year-old daughter of Central Banker, consigned by Sequel Bloodstock, Agent for Chester and Mary Broman, was purchased by Beach Haven for $110,000 after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. Trained by Linda Rice, she has earned $144.000 to date. watch her under tack video

Gatsas Stables, R. A. Hill Stable and Swick Stable’s Funny Guy circled horses to reach contention in the $200,000 New York Stallion Stakes, took command a sixteenth from home and scored by three quarters of a length. Fellow OBS graduate Thorny Tale (October ’18) settled for third. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old colt by Big Brown, trained by John Terranova, now 5-2-1-0 with earnings of $160,270. After turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 2/5, he was purchased for $45,000 out of the Mayberry Farm consignment. watch his under tack video

Judge Lanier Racing’s Performance Review came out to the middle of the track in Sunday’s $75,000 Neon Desert Handicap at Sunland Park, took the lead coming to the sixteenth pole and drew away to win by two lengths, with fellow OBS graduate Kram (April ’17) running third. It’s the first stakes win for the 6-year-old daughter of Eskendereya, sold for $150,000 at the 2015 OBS April Sale by RiceHorse Stables after breezing an eighth in :10 3/5 at the Under Tack Show. Trained by Miguel Hernandez, she’s now 11-4-1-2 and has earned $110,590 to date. watch her under tack video
