Hard Spun colt tops Spring Sale’s opening session

Hip No. 207, a son of Hard Spun consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, went to Timothy Hills, Agent for Patrick Welsh, for $430,000, topping the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The chestnut colt, who worked a quarter in :21 flat at Tuesday’s Under Tack session, is out of stakes winner Katerbug, by Pulpit, a half sister to stakes winner Outplay.

Hip No. 169, a son of Uncle Mo consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was sold for $425,000 to Narvick International, Agent for Katsumi Yoshida. The bay colt, who breezed a quarter on Monday in :21 4/5, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Isabella Sings out of stakes placed Isobel Baillie (GB), by Lomitas (GB).

Red Oak Farm & Newtown Anner Stud paid $420,000 for Hip No. 208, a son of Tiznow consigned by Brick City Thoroughbreds, Agent. The bay colt, who worked a quarter on Tuesday in :21 2/5, is out of Kateri, by Indian Charlie, a three quarter sister to grade one winner Tiz Miz Sue.

Hip No. 224, a chestnut filly by Flat Out consigned by Costanzo Sales, who worked a :10 flat eighth on Tuesday, was purchased by Martin Anthony for $370,000. She’s a half sister to graded stakes winner Hembree out of Knockatrina, by Langfuhr.

Hip No. 109, a daughter of Twirling Candy, whose Under Tack quarter in :21 flat was co-fastest at the distance at Monday’s Under Tack session, was purchased by Belladonna Racing LLC for $335,000. The bay filly is out of Henley, by Corinthian, a half sister to graded stakes winner Mr. Commons.

Charles H. Boden, Agent for Colts Neck Stables LLC, went to $310,000 for Hip No. 249, a son of First Samurai consigned by Off the Hook LLC, Agent. The chestnut colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Decorated Soldier out of graded stakes winner Lakenheath, by Colonial Affair.

Hip No. 242, a son of Sky Mesa consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, was sold to Charles H. Boden, Agent for Colts Neck Stables LLC, for $300,000. The bay colt, whose eighth in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance on Tuesday, is out of Lady Lavery, by Elusive Quality, a half sister to graded stakes winner Skylighter.

Narvick International paid $300,000 for Hip No. 255, a bay Kitten’s Joy filly who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday. Consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, she’s out of graded stakes placed Laureldean Gale, by Grand Slam, a half sister to graded stakes winner Secret History.

Hip No. 1, a son of Blame consigned by All In Line Stables, Agent, went to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners for $290,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 1/5 at Monday’s Under Tack session, is out of Facethefront, by War Front, a half sister to graded stakes winner Ball Four.

Dennis O’Neill paid $290,000 for Hip No. 187, a son of Lemon Drop Kid consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC. The dark bay or brown colt, who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5, is out of stakes winner Joffe’s Run, by Giant’s Causeway, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner Laguna Seca.

For the day, 148 horses brought a total of $14,243,500 compared with 168 selling for a total of $15,904,000 at last year’s opening session. The average price was $96,240, compared to $94,667 in 2018 while the median price was $58,500, compared with $52,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 29.9%; it was 20% last year.
