The past year has seen a continuation of the high level of performance horsemen expect from OBS March Sale graduates. Since the beginning of 2018, 110 March graduates were on the board 224 times in stakes races, with 58 horses accounting for 80 stakes victories. At the game’s highest level, 51 March grads won or placed 89 times in graded stakes with 23 scoring in 26 graded events.

The summer’s biggest headline went to Lee Pokoik’s catalog cover girl Sippican Harbor, who charged to the lead a sixteenth from home and won Saratoga’s $350,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) by two lengths. Consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, the now 3-year-old filly by Orb went through the ring at last year’s March sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. Trained by Gary Contessa, she ended her juvenile campaign with a 4-2-0-0 record and $262,650 in earnings. watch her under tack video

Breeze Easy LLC’s Shang Shang Shang, who shares the catalog cover, came out of last year’s March Sale, broke her maiden at Keeneland at first asking and then traveled to Royal Ascot to take on the boys in the Norfolk Stakes (G2).  The Florida-bred daughter of Shanghai Bobby led all the way, holding off a late charge to win by a nose.  A two time OBS graduate, she was purchased out of the SBM Training & Sales consignment by Breeze Easy for $200,000 at the 2018 OBS March Sale after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5. She had been sold previously as a short yearling by Summerfield at the 2017 Winter Mixed Sale. Trained by Wesely Ward, she has earned $101,524 to date. watch her under tack video

William H. Lawrence’s Analyze It, featured on the catalog’s back cover, has two graded stakes wins to his credit, winning the Cecil B. DeMille (G3) at Del Mar at two and Keeneland’s Transylvania Stakes (G3) last April. The colt by Point of Entry ended his sophomore campaign with a third place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). Trained by Chad Brown, he’s now 8-3-3-1 with $759,400 in earnings. He turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat before he was purchased for $190,000 by Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, out of the Hoppel’s Horse & Cattle Co. consignment at the 2017 OBS March Sale. watch his under tack video

The 2018 March Sale also produced a pair of talented colts in Michael Lund Petersen’s Mucho Gusto and Hollendorfer LLC, Pearl Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds’ Gunmetal Gray, one-two in the recent Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. It was the second graded stakes win for the colt by Mucho Macho Man, winner of Del Mar’s Bob Hope Stakes (G3) at two. Consigned to the 2018 OBS March Sale by Kirkwood Stables, Agent, he turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Now 4-3-1-0 for trainer Bob Baffert, he has earned $234,000 to date. watch his under tack video

The latest star to emerge from the 2018 March Sale is Leonard C. Green’s A Thread of Blue, who took the Palm Beach Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park last Saturday. It was third straight win for the 3-year-old colt by Hard Spun, who took Gulfstream’s Dania Beach Stakes in his previous start. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, he’s now 7-4-1-1 with earnings of $241,590.
