Kent Spellman’s Kirby’s Penny tried stakes company for the first time in the $200,000 Vagrancy Handicap (G3) on Saturday at Belmont Park, rallied from just off the pace to wear down the leaders in the stretch and won going away by a length and a half. Woodford Racing LLC’s Engage overcame a sluggish start in Sunday’s $90,000 Gold Fever Stakes at Belmont, battled down the stretch in the mud and was best by a nose.
