Tapit colt tops Spring Sale’s second session

Hip No. 352, a son of Tapit consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, went to Robert E. & Lawana Low for $750,000 to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2018 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The gray or roan colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 2/5 at Tuesday’s Under Tack session, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Commissioner out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Flaming Heart, by Touch Gold, a half sister to the dam of Vino Rosso, one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby (G1) after his victory in the recent Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct

  • Hip No. 403, Wicked Wizard, a dark bay or brown colt by Speightstown consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, who worked an Under Tack eighth on Tuesday in :10 flat, was sold to Narvick International, Agent for Katsumi Yoshida, for $700,000. He’s out of stakes winner Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun, and is a half brother to champion Good Magic, heading to the Kentucky Derby (G1) after his recent victory in Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes (G2).
  • Hip No. 534, a daughter of Malibu Moon consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, also brought $700,000, going Speedway Stables, LLC. The dark bay or brown filly, who breezed a quarter in :21 flat last Tuesday, is out of Just Joyful, by Street Boss, a half sister to champion Boston Harbor.
  • Hip No. 606, a daughter of Into Mischief consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, was sold to Spendthrift Farm for $650,000. The bay filly, who’s eighth in :9 4/5 on Wednesday was the session’s co-fastest at the distance, is out of Loveofalifetime, by Medaglia d’Oro, a half sister to graded stakes winner Savorthetime.
  • Justin Casse, Agent, went to $525,000 for Hip No. 474, a bay colt by Candy Ride (ARG) consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, who worked a quarter in :21 flat at Wednesday’s Under Tack session. He’s out of High On the Hill, by Fusaichi Pegasus, a half sister to graded stakes winner Lil’s Lad.
  • Hip No. 592, a son of Tapit consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was sold to Calumet Farm for $500,000. The gray or roan colt, who breezed a quarter on Wednesday in :21 flat, is out of Lindsay’s Way, by Giant’s Causeway, a half sister to grade one winner Startac.
  • Hip No. 552, a chestnut colt by Kantharos consigned by Off the Hook LLC, Agent, went to Solis / Litt for $400,000.  Out of La Catira Jatar, by Best of the Bests (IRE), from the family of champion Santa Amelia, his eighth on Wednesday in :9 4/5 was co-fastest at the distance of the sale.
  • Hip No. 366, a son of Cross Traffic consigned by Off the Hook LLC, Agent, was purchased by Doubledown Stables, Inc. for $350,000. The bay colt, out of Forestelle, by Forestry, a daughter of stakes winner Unbridled Lady, worked an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5.
  • Alrashid USA Group went to $350,000 for Hip No. 370,  a chestnut filly by Street Boss consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales LLC, Agent, who  sped the Tuesday Under Tack session’s fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :9 4/5. She’s a full sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Soul Driver out of For Passion, by Not For Love.
  • Hip No. 337, a son of Congrats consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent, went to Steven W. Young, Agent, for $300,000. The bay colt, who turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is a half brother to stakes placed OBS graduate Lady Racer out of Fantasy Forest, by Forestry.

For the day, 180 horses brought a total of $18,932,500, a Spring Sale session record, compared with 167 selling for a total of $14,111,500 at last year’s second session. The average price was $105,181, up 24.5% compared to $84,500 in 2017 while the median price was $56,000, a 40% rise compared with $40,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 22.4%; it was 20.8% last year.
