Smart Strike colt tops March Sale’s second session

Hip No. 591, a son of Smart Strike consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold to Lane’s End Bloodstock for $1,700,000 to top the second and final session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2016 March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :9 4/5 at Friday’s Under Tack session, is out of graded stakes placed Glamorista, by Unbridled’s Song, a half sister to grade one winning millionaire Critical Eye.

Solis and Litt went to $825,000 for Hip No. 558,  a dark bay or brown filly by Twirling Candy consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent. Out of Felicitee, by Menifee, a half sister to graded stakes placed Mazella, her Under Tack quarter in :20 2/5 was the sale’s co-fastest.

Hip No. 449, bay colt by City Zip consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, was sold to Tom Durant for $585,000. Out of Cap’s Legacy, by Stroll, a daughter of stakes winner In My Cap, his Under Tack eighth in :9 3/5 was co-fastest at the distance of the sale. .

Mr. Durant also paid $510,000 for Hip No. 562, a son of Tapit consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent. The gray or roan colt, out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Filare l’Oro, by Hard Spun, posted an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5.

Hip No. 543, a daughter of Giant’s Causeway consigned by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, Agent, was sold to Bob Baffert, Agent, for $575,000. The bay filly, who worked an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5,  is out of Empire West, by Empire Maker, a daughter of stakes winner Defer West and half sister to graded stakes winner Forest Music.

Hip No. 578, consigned by King’s Equine, Agent, a dark bay or brown colt by Arch out of stakes winner Frisk Her, by Officer, was purchased by Robert McMartin, Agent, for $550,000. He turned in an eighth in :9 4/5 at the Under Tack Show.

Hip No. 606, a chestnut colt by Kantharos whose Under Tack eighth in :9 3/5 was the Friday Under Tack session’s co-fastest at the distance, was sold to Dennis O’Neill for $550,000. Consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, he’s out of Gracious Assault, by Glitterman, a full sister to graded stakes placed Glitman.

Hip No. 437, a bay filly by Scat Daddy out of Boldy’s Reflection, by Bold Ruckus, was sold to J. McCalmont, Agent for M. V. Magnier, for $535,000. A half sister to grade one winner Set Play, she breezed an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5.

WinStar and China Horse Club paid $535,000 for Hip No. 576, a son of Uncle Mo consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent. The bay colt, out of stakes winner Free Fee Lady, by Victory Gallop, breezed and eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show.

For the session, 154 horses sold for a total of $25,106,500, compared with 156 horses bringing $24,728,000 at last year’s second session. The average price was $163,029, compared with $158,513 while the median price was $100,000, identical to last year’s figure. The buyback percentage was 26.3%; it was 25.4% in 2015.

For the entire sale, 325 horses sold for a total of $51,650,000 compared with 325 bringing a March record $55,432,000 last year. The average price was $158,923 compared with $170,560 a year ago while the median price was $100,000 compared with $105,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 25%; it was 23% in 2015.

The next sale at OBS is the Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, set for April 19th through April 22nd with Under Tack Shows scheduled for April 11th through April 16th.
