V. E. Day scores in the Travers at Saratoga

Magalen O. Bryant’s V. E. Day came into Saratoga’s $1, 250, 000 Travers Stakes (G1) riding a three race win streak and the 3-year-old colt by English Channel, overlooked at 19-1, made it four in a row, putting in a sustained run down the stretch that ended in victory by a nose in the last jump. It’s his second stakes win and gives him a 6-4-1-0 record and $829,010 in earnings. Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, to the 2013 OBS March Sale, he was sold for $135,000 to Chester Stables LLC, Agent, after working a quarter in :21 4/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch his under tack video

Michael House’s Big John B tried stakes company for the first time Saturday in the $201,250 Del Mar Handicap (G2), rallied on the turn to take command in the stretch then drew off to 5-1/4 length victory. It’s the sixth win in nine starts this year for the 5-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Hard Spun, now 28-11-5-3 with earnings of $458,805. Robert K. Johnson, Frank Coniglio, Richard Rendina and Frank Ferrigine’s lightly raced Speed Seeker scored her first stakes win in Saturday’s $154,417 Ontario Colleen Stakes (G3) on the turf at Woodbine, rallying from off the pace, finding room between horses a furlong from home and charging to a 4-3/4 length victory. Purchased for $10,000 out of the Classic Quarter Farm consignment at the 2012 OBS August Sale, the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly by Heatseeker (IRE) is now 3-2-0-0 and has earned $118,915 to date.
