Big Drama colt tops Open Yearling Sale’s final session

Hip No. 658, Dangerous Bend, a colt by Big Drama consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent went to Hal Queen for $185,000 to top the second and final Open session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2014 August Yearling Sale. The dark bay or brown colt is out of stakes winner Kickapoo Princess, by Unreal Zeal.

Summerfield also consigned Hip No. 650, a daughter of Telling sold to Alex & JoAnn Lieblong for $180,000. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Kahlua Bay, by Catrail, a half sister to grade one winner and leading sire Medaglia d’Oro.

Landmark Racing paid $77,000 for Hip No. 696, a daughter of f Ghostzapper consigned by Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent), Agent. The bay filly is out of Little Swoon, by You and I.

Hip No. 657, Buffett, a First Dude colt also consigned by Summerfield, went to Grassroots Training & Sales LLC for $60,000. A half brother to stakes winner Westmoreland Girl, he’s out of Key West Appeal, by Valid Appeal.

Robert K. Johnson paid $55,000 for Hip No. 924, Southern General, a son of General Quarters consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent. The gray or roan colt, a half brother to graded stakes winner Speed Seeker, winner of the recent Ontario Colleen Stakes (G3) at Woodbine, is out of Seraphic Too, by Southern Halo.

Hip No. 750, Rebel Base, a colt by Wildcat Heir consigned by Oakleaf Farm (Liz & Norman Wilson), Agent, was sold to Justin Casse / JSM Equine LLC for $50,000. The bay colt is out of Mo’s Prize, by Eltish, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Flamenco.

For the session, 225 yearlings sold for a total of $2,820,600, compared with 238 horses bringing $3,802,600 at the corresponding session in 2013. The average price was $12,536 compared with $15,997 a year ago while the median price was $8,000 compared to $11,250 in 2013. The buyback percentage was 33.2%; it was 17.1% last year.

For the two Open sessions, 491 horses sold for a total of $6,322,600, compared with 507 grossing $8,441,200 a year ago. The average price was $12,877, compared with last year’s Open sale record $16,649 while the median price was $8,000 compared with 2013’s Open sale record $13,000. The buyback percentage was 29.6%; it was 13.9% a year ago.

At Tuesday’s Selected session, 171 horses sold for a total of $7,860,700 compared with 143 grossing $7,705,000 at the 2013 Selected Yearling Sale. The average price was $45,969 compared with $53,881 last year, while the median was $35,000 compared with $42,000 in 2013.  The buyback percentage was 26.6%; it was 13.3% in 2013. Seventeen horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with twelve at last year’s session. Topping the session was Hip No. 75, a colt by Big Drama out of stakes winner Doc’s Doll, by Out of Place, sold to George Bolton for $230,000. The chestnut colt, consigned by Beth Bayer, Agent, is a half brother to stakes winner Gator Brew.

For the entire August Yearling Sale, twenty horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with twelve in 2013.
