Rose to Gold takes Oaklawn’s Honeybee Stakes

Coady photographyKathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofani’s Rose to Gold took the lead at the break in the $150, 000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park and never looked back, cruising to a 2-3/4 length victory. That’s two graded stakes wins for the 3-year-old daughter of Friends Lake, consigned by Karrington Stables, Agent, to the 2011 OBS August Sale. Her fourth stakes victory leaves her with a 6-4-1-0 record and $477,889 in earnings.

Currah Stables’s Manuka Honey jumped from a Gulfstream maiden victory to the $59,000 Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, went right to the front and gave nothing else a chance, pulling away to a 7-1/4 length victory. Graded stakes placed at two before breaking her maiden, the 3-year-old daughter of Borrego is now 7-2-2-1 and has earned $97,084. She was sold for $62,000 by Mayberry Farm, Agent, at the 2012 OBS April Sale. watch her under tack video

Cowboy Cal colt quickest at March Under Tack finale

Hip No. 220, a colt by Cowboy Cal consigned by Southern Chase Farm Inc. (Greg and Karen Dodd), Agent, worked a quarter in :20 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the second and final session of the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Deceptive, by Clever Trick, and is a half brother to Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) winner Mizdirection.

Hip No. 318, a Discreet Cat filly consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, worked the same distance in :21 flat. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Maria’s Pride, by Maria’s Mon, a half sister to stakes winner Smoke Mountain.

Two horses worked quarters in :21 1/5. Hip No. 244, consigned by Don R. Graham, is a chestnut filly by Malibu Moon out of stakes winner Fast Deal, by Grand Slam. Hip No. 261 is a chestnut colt by Tiz Wonderful out of stakes placed Glittering Tax, consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent.

Six youngsters shared honors for the session’s fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :9 4/5. Henny Hughes colt fastest at March Sale Under Tack opener

Hip No, 58, a colt by Henny Hughes consigned by Southern Chase Farm Inc. (Greg and Karen Dodd), Agent, sped a quarter in :20 3/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training. The chestnut colt is out of Sea Gift, by A.P. Indy, a daughter of graded stakes winner Ocean Queen.

Hip No. 50, a Henny Hughes colt consigned by Ocala Stud, worked the same distance in :21 flat. The chestnut colt is out of stakes winner Running Bobcats, by Running Stag.

Spring in the Air, Spring Venture head OBS Championship Stakes

Spring comes early to Ocala as graded stakes winners Spring in the Air and Spring Venture headline the $100, 000 OBS Championship Stakes as OBS holds its 24th annual Day of Champions race card on Monday, March 11th.

The four races, for three-year-olds who have gone through the ring at an OBS sale, offer purses totaling $300,000 and will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com as well as the DRF and Bloodhorse websites. Post time for the first race is 1:00 p.m.

Trainer Mark Casse will saddle both daughters of Spring at Last in the mile and a sixteenth OBS Championship Stakes for fillies, the third race on the card. John C. Oxley’s Spring in the Air’s juvenile campaign was highlighted by her victory in the prestigious Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. Patrick Husbands, who rode her in the Alcibiades, has been named to ride.

Spring Venture, supplemented to the race by Casse for owners Gary Barber and Stoneway Farm LLC, beat Spring in the Air last fall in the Natalma Stakes (G2) at Woodbine then returned to score in the Mazarine Stakes (G3).  Luis Saez has the riding assignment.

The field in post position order: Gold Square LLC’s Wickapecko, Joe Rocco; Christine Vogt’s Cotton Pickin, Ronnie Allen Jr.; Maestre Racing Stable and Joseph A. Arango’s One Eye Cap, Eddie Dominguez; Pinnacle Racing Stable’s Cupids Messenger, Juan Leyva; Spring Venture; West Point Thoroughbreds’ Toasting, Joel Rosario; Rich Cecrle and Jennifer Hayford-Quinones’s Time Is Forever, Alex Gonzalez; Spring in the Air. All carry 120 pounds.

The afternoon’s final race is the $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for colts and geldings at a mile and a sixrteenth.  The race drew a field of nine, headed by TriStar Racing LLC, Joe B. Denson and Brent Gasaway’s graded stakes placed Brown Almighty, winner of the Sunny’s Halo Stakes on the turf at Louisiana Downs last summer. The first stakes winner for sire Big Brown, he ships in from Oaklawn Park for trainer Tim Ice and will be ridden by Terry Thompson.

Mark Casse sends out graded stakes placed Indiano Jones and stakes placed Sky Commander for John C. Oxley. Joel Rosario will ride Indiano Jones while Patrick Husbands will be aboard Sky Commander.

Pinnacle Racing Stables’ Uptown Anthem, on the board in three stakes at Calder at two, ships in for trainer Bill Kaplan. The gelding by Gotcha Gold will be ridden by Juan Leyva.

Todd Pletcher has supplemented Barber & Barber’s Jack Milton to the OBS Championship. The War Front colt won at first asking at Gulfstream and was second in a good effort in his only other start. Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez, aboard in both races, again has the assignment.

The field in post position order: Sky Commander; Tami Dellatore-Bobo’s Hesa Big Dude, Jesse Campbell; Indiano Jones; Kenwood Racing LLC’s Michael With Us, Edgar Prado; Michael L. Reavis’ Rico Suave, Ronnie Allen Jr.; Ken & Sarah Ramsey’s Brazilian Court, Joel Rosario; Uptown Anthem; Brown Almighty; Jack Milton. All will carry 122 pounds.

Stakes winners Cor Cor and Leinan get top billing in the first race on the card, the $50,000 OBS Sprint Stakes for fillies at six furlongs. Steve Ballou and Harriet Waldron’s Cor Cor comes in off a 4-1/2 length victory in the Battle of New Orleans Stakes on the turf at Fair Grounds. The Florida-bred filly by Smoke Glacken, a supplemental entry, suffered her only defeat when second to the highly regarded Kauai Katie Gulfstream’s Old Hat Stakes (G3) on New Year’s Day after winning Tampa’s Sandpiper Stakes in December. Scott Spieth will ride for trainer Joan Scott.

James and Alice Sapara’s Leinan ended her juvenile campaign in style with a win in Woodbine’s Glorious Song Stakes in November The Florida-bred Bwana Charlie filly comes in with earnings of $145,773 for trainer Josie Carroll. Joel Rosario has been named to ride.

Here are the horses and riders in post position order for the six furlong race for 3-year-old fillies: Bernard G. Schaeffer’s Wild For Love, Joe Rocco; John C. Oxley’s Send An Angel, Gary Boulanger; Equels Marro Racing LLC’s Circular Rainbow, Antonio Gallardo; Klaravich Stables, Inc. and  William Lawrence’s Over the Counter, Luis Saez; K.K. & V. Devi Jayaraman’s Baby Princess, Manoel Cruz; Cor Cor; Robert  A. Norman’s Dreamlicious, Juan Leyva; Leinan; Rodney R. Rowles’ Bwana Go Fast, Jermaine Bridgmohan. All will carry 120 pounds.

Seven will go in the six furlong $50,000 OBS Sprint Stakes for colts and geldings, headed by Amaty Racing Stables and Sterlng Stables’ Mind Spell, third last out in a sharp effort in a Tampa Bay Downs allowance. The Florida-bred son of Proud Accolade, trained by Jason Dacosta, will be ridden by John Velazquez.

The field in post position order: Tommy Roberts Racing Stable LLC’s Capital City, Joel Rosario; Tom Gregerson’s Rammer, Jose A. Garcia; Alan J. Garey’s Dixie Deputy, Luis Saez; Rick Shanley’s Pro Prospect, Edgar Prado; Mind Spell; John C. Oxley’s Conquestor, Gary Boulanger; Rancho Grande Farm Inc. and Ideas Medical, Inc.’s King Solomon, Federico Mata. All will carry 122 pounds.

March Sale Under Tack Show begins Thursday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2013 March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training is set for Thursday and Friday, March 7th and 8th at 8:00 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-172 will breeze on Thursday and Hip No’s 173-345 will work on Friday.

The March Sale is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12th and 13th with each session beginning at 11 a.m. The OBS Day of Champions Races will be run on Monday, March 11th with first post time at 1:00 p.m.

OBS March graduates are again competing successfully at racing’s highest levels, with two of last year’s March graduates in serious contention for the classics. Revolutionary overcame a nightmare trip to win the Withers (G3) at Aqueduct and Itsmyluckyday handed Eclipse Award winner Shanghai Bobby his first defeat in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream. Alcibiades Stakes (G1) winner Spring in the Air came out of last year’s sale as did unbeaten graded stakes winner Unlimited Budget. Hopeful Stakes (G1) winner Currency Swap carried the 2011 March  Sale banner to a graded stakes victory in 2012, as did Hierro, Stealcase, Mucho Mas Macho, Secret Circle and Unbridled’s Note. Plum Pretty came out of the 2010 sale to win the Kentucky Oaks in 2011 and  Oaklawn’s Apple Blossom (G1) last year. Still going strong at six, 2009 graduate Camp Victory added Hollywood’s Triple Bend Handicap (G1) to his resume in 2012.

The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and via the Blood-Horse and Daily Racing Form websites. The workouts will also be recorded and videos will be available on the website, in their entirety or by individual hip number. They will also be available for viewing in the video room adjacent to the Horsemen’s Lounge in the sales pavilion as well as several kiosks in the lobby and the covered walking ring. In-room viewing is available at Holiday Inn, The Courtyard by Marriott, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton. Under Tack Show results are posted on the OBS website.

Comma to the Top takes Aqueduct’s Tom Fool

Adam Coglianese photoGary Barber, Roger Birnbaum & Kevin Tsujihara’s Comma to the Top looked beaten in the stretch after setting the pace in Aqueduct’s $200, 000 Tom Fool Handicap (G3), but the 5-year-old millionaire gelding by Bwana Charlie came again in the final yards and was up to win by a nose. The two time OBS graduate was sold first by Beth Bayer, Agent, as a weanling at the 2010 OBS Fall Mixed Sale before bringing $22,000 when purchased out of the Indian Prairie Ranch consignment at the 2010 April Sale. His fourth graded stakes win gives him a 28-12-2-2 record and earnings of $1,180,696. watch his under tack video

 WinStar Farm LLC’s General Election tried stakes company for the first time in the $75,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday and he circled horses on the turn, closed eight wide and scored by half a length, with fellow 2012 OBS March graduate For Greater Glory getting up for third. It’s the second win in four starts for the 3-year-old colt by Harlan’s Holiday, sold for $150,000 by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, at last year’s March Sale. OBS Championship Day Entries taken Monday, March 4th

Entries for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s twenty-fourth annual Day of Champions will be taken Monday, March 4th. The four-race card will be run on Monday, March 11th, with first post at 1:00 p.m.

The four races are restricted to 3-year-olds who have gone through the ring at an OBS sale: the six furlong $50,000 OBS Sprint for fillies, the six furlong $50,000 OBS Sprint for colts and geldings, the mile and a sixteenth $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for fillies and the mile and a sixteenth $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for colts and geldings.
