2013 March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training

Catalogs for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2013 March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training are now available via the OBS website at obssales.com. The website features a sortable master index for the catalog and pedigree updates occurring since the catalog went to the printer.

The iPad version of the catalog  is now available via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The App allows users to download and view the catalog, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capability. A total of 345 juveniles have been cataloged for the two-day OBS sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12th and 13th, with both sessions beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Under Tack Show is set for 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 7th (Hips 1-172), and Friday, March 8th (Hips 173-345).  The Under Tack Show and Sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF and Bloodhorse websites. The 24th annual OBS Championship Stakes races will be run on Monday, March 11th, with first post time at 1:00 p.m.

The March Sale has long been a source of top class racehorses, as OBS Selected Two-Year-Old Sales have produced the winners of 17 Eclipse Awards, 12 Breeders’ Cup races and 36 millionaire graduates.

Since the beginning of 2012, OBS March graduates have accounted for 50 stakes wins, including thirteen graded stakes.  The latest is WinStar Farm LLC’s Revolutionary, who overcame a nightmare trip to win last Saturday’s Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. The 3-year-old son of War Pass was sold for $235,000 at the 2012 OBS March Sale by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent. He’s now 5-2-1-2 and has earned $188,500. 

Also on the Derby Trail is Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa’s Itsmyluckyday, who handed 2012’s juvenile champion Shanghai Bobby his first defeat in the recent Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream. The 3-year-old colt by Lawyer Ron, sold by Eisaman Equine, Agent, for $110,000 at the 2012 OBS March Sale, has earned $425,600 to date.

John Oxley’s Spring in the Air also came out of last year’s March Sale and captured the prestigious Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keenleand, ending her two-year-old season with earnings of $431,519. The filly by Spring at Last was sold for $130,000 by Eddie Woods, Agent.

The 2012 March Sale also produced Repole Stables’ unbeaten graded winner Unlimited Budget, who captured Aqueduct’s $250,000 Demoiselle Stakes (G3) in her second start. The daughter of Street Sense was sold for $475,000 by Ocala Stud.

Bluegrass Hall LLC’s 2012 March graduate Hightail won the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint in a stretch duel over OBS April graduate Merit Man. The son of Mineshaft was purchased by trainer D. Wayne Lukas on behalf Brad Kelley’s Bluegrass Hall for $345,000 from Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent.  

Previous March Sale graduates scoring grade one wins in 2012 included Peachtree Stable’s 2011 Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Plum Pretty, who added Oaklawn’s Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) to her resume in 2012. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, sold for $130,000 by Kirkwood Stables, Agent, at the 2010 OBS March Sale, retired with earnings of $1,656,700 and was sold as a broodmare prospect for $4,200,000 this past November.

Featherston, Jacobsen & Miller’s Camp Victory won the $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap (G1) at Betfair Hollywood Park and ended 2012 with earnings of $547,986. The multiple graded stakes winner by Forest Camp was sold for $90,000 by M & H Training and Sales, Agent, at the 2009 OBS March Sale. 

This year’s OBS March Sale features juveniles sired by the 2012 General Sire List’s top five:  Giant’s Causeway, Empire Maker, Speightstown, Tapit, and Smart Strike. Other prominent sires represented in the sale are Arch, Candy Ride, Dixie Union, Ghostzapper, Harlan’s Holiday, Indian Charlie, Kitten’s Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, More Than Ready, Pulpit, Street Cry, Tiznow, and Unbridled’s Song. Top young sires are well represented by Bernardini, Flower Alley, Hard Spun, Henny Hughes, Scat Daddy, Street Sense, and War Front. Last year’s talented freshman sires with offspring in the sale are Big Brown, Curlin, Into Mischief, Majestic Warrior, and Spring At Last. Exciting newcomers with first foals racing in 2013 include top class racehorses Colonel John, Pioneerof the Nile and Zensational.
