Empire Maker filly tops March Sale’s opening session

Hip No. 180, Ado, a filly by Empire Maker consigned by Harris Training Center LLC, Agent, went to Frank Fletcher Racing Operations for $485,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2012 March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay filly, a half sister to stakes winner Passport out of graded stakes winner Trip, by Lord at War, worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at Thursday’s Under Tack session.

Hip No. 58, a colt by Montbrook consigned by Ocala Stud, Agent, was sold to Toyomitsu Hirai for $470,000. The dark bay or brown colt, whose quarter in :20 4/5 was co-fastest at Thursday’s session of the Under Tack Show, is out of stakes placed My Golden Quest, by Coronado’s Quest, a half sister to graded stakes placed My Golden Song.

Hip No. 126, an A.P. Indy colt consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, was sold to Mark Casse, Agent, for $425,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who worked an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack show, is out of graded stakes winner Sharp Susan, by Touch Gold, and is a half brother to grade one winner Spring at Last.

Hip No. 165, Swig It, a colt by Tapit, consigned by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, went to Colts Neck Stables for $400,000. The gray or roan colt, out of Swigert, by Fusaichi Pegasus, a half sister to graded winner Mutakddim.

For the day, 91 horses sold for a total of $11,877,000, compared with 119 horses bringing $10,333,000 at last year’s opening session. The average price was $130,516, up 50.3% compared to $86,832 last year, while the median price soared to $100,000 from $57,000 in 2011. The buyback percentage was 26.6%, it was 30% a year ago. Forty six horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with 30 a year ago.
