Scat Daddy colt tops March Sale’s opening session

Hip No. 137, a colt by Scat Daddy consigned by Old South Farm, Agent, went to K.K. Eishindo for $400,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2011 March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training. The bay colt, out of Madagascat, by Tale of the Cat, a half sister to graded stakes winner Lindsay Jean, worked an eighth in :9 4/5, fastest work at the distance at Friday’s session of the Under Tack Show.

Todd Pletcher went to $380,000 on behalf of Repole Stable for Hip No. 226, a bay colt by Street Sense consigned by Classic Bloodstock (Danzel Brendemuehl), Agent. Out of graded stakes winner Regally Appealing, by Valid Appeal, the bay colt breezed an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show.

Hip No. 82, a colt by Mizzen Mast consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, went to Buzz Chace, Agent for Richard Santulli for $350,000. The gray or roan colt, who sped an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show, is out of Im Cruising Dixie, by Dixie Union, a half sister to stakes winner Patsyprospect.

Hip No. 238, a colt by Congrats consigned by Tradewinds Farm, Agent, was sold to Spendthrift Farm for $350,000. The gray or roan colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 2/5, is out of Rosekris Point, by Point Given, a half sister to stakes winner Bountempo.

Hip No. 223, Julius Caesar, a colt by Empire Maker consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, was sold for $330,000 to ARC Bloodstock, Agent for Earle I. Mack. The bay colt, out of graded stakes placed Redhead Riot, by Top Account, worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show.

Hip No. 16, an Indian Charlie colt consigned by McKathan Bros., Agent, was sold for $325,000 to Todd Pletcher, Agent for Repole Stable, the Uncle Mo connections. The bay colt is out of Eva’s Melody, by Storm Creek, a half sister to graded stakes winner Straight Man. He worked an eighth in :10 flat at the Under Tack Show.

Also bringing $325,000 was Hip No. 40, filly by Officer out of graded stakes placed Freakin Streakin, by Tactical Advantage. Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, and sold to Iron Horse Racing, the bay filly worked a quarter at the Under Tack Show in :21 2/5.

For the day, 117 horses sold for a total of $10,322,000, compared with 84 bringing $8,126,000 at last year’s opening session. The average price was $88,222 compared to $96,738 last year, while the median price was $57,000 compared with $70,000 in 2010. The buyback percentage was 31.1%, identical to last year. Thirty-one horses sold for $100,000 or more compared with 29 a year ago.
