Spring Sale Under Tack Show starts Sunday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2024 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training begins Sunday, April 7th, and continues through Saturday, April 13th. All seven sessions begin at 8:00 a.m.

Hip No.’s 1-173 will breeze on Sunday. Hip No.’s 174-345 go to the track Monday; Hip No’s 346-518 breeze Tuesday; Hip No’s 519-690 work Wednesday, Hip No.’s 691-863 breeze Thursday, Hip No’s 864-1035 work on Friday and Hip No’s 1036-1208 will go to the track Saturday.

The Sale is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16th through Friday, April 19th with each session beginning at 10:30 a.m. Hip No’s 1-302 go on the block Tuesday, Hip No’s 303-604 will be offered Wednesday, Hip No.’s 605-906 sell Thursday and Hip No’s. 907-1208 will sell on Friday.

The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and on YouTube and the TDN, DRF, Blood-Horse and Past The Wire websites. The workouts will be recorded and can be viewed on the website, in their entirety or by individual hip number. They will also be available in the Video Room as well as several kiosks in the breezeway and covered walking ring. Visitors to Ocala will find the videos available for in-room viewing at The Courtyard by Marriott, Holiday Inn & Suites, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton. The OBS Spring Sale has evolved to become the world’s preeminent juvenile auction, producing champions, millionaires and Breeders’ Cup winners, with alumni competing at the game’s highest levels and on the sport’s biggest stages.

OBS Spring grads win from coast to coast and overseas. Since the beginning of 2023, 87 OBS Spring graduates have won or placed in 139 graded races, better than two per week, with 44 grads accounting for 55 graded wins, including those scored by the recent five grade one stakes winners on the catalog’s front cover.

Bob Baffert also trains Zedan Racing’s Arabian Lion, who took the $400,000 Woody Stephens Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. The colt by Justify, a two-time graded stakes winner, has compiled a 9-3-2-1 record and earned $498,100. Natalie J. Baffert and Debbie Lanni’s Du Jour passed the million-dollar mark with his recent victory in the Santa Anita’s $300,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. It was the third graded win for the son of Temple City, trained by Bob Baffert, now 17-6-3-2 career record with $1,118,220 in earnings. Pierre Jean Amestoy, Jr., Leslie A. Amestoy and Roger K. Beasley’s Practical Move was a three-time graded stakes winner, the last a victory in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) for trainer Tim Yakteen. The 2022 OBS Spring Sale graduate, purchased for $230,000 out of the Eisaman Equine consignment after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5, had an 8-5-1-2 record and earned $923,200 at the races.

FMQ Stables’ Saudi Crown was a wire-to-wire winner of the $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby (G1) at Parx in September for trainer Brad Cox. The son of Always Dreaming has a 9-4-2-1 career record with $2,982,085 in earnings. OBS Spring Sale Catalog now online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2024 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com.

A total of 1,207 juveniles have been cataloged for the four-day sale, now set for Tuesday through Friday, April 16th – 19th. All sessions will begin at 10:30 a.m.

  • Hip No 1 – 302 will sell Tuesday, April 16th
  • Hip No. 303 – 604 will be sold Wednesday, April 17th
  • Hip No. 605 – 906 will sell Thursday, April 18th

For the session, 125 horses sold for a total of $18,912,600 compared with 153 horses bringing $24,069,000 in 2023. The average price was $151,301 compared with $157,314. The median price was $80,000 compared with $75,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 29.8%; it was 17.7% last year.

For the entire sale, 447 horses grossed $66,487,600 compared with 464 bringing $71,473,500 in 2023. The average price was $148,742 compared with $154,038 last year and the median price was $75,000 unchanged from 2023. The buyback percentage was 25.1%; it was 20.7% in 2023.

OBS March Sale begins Tuesday

The 2024 OBS March Sale of Two Year Olds in Training begins Tuesday, March 12th. A total of 849 juveniles are cataloged for the three-day sale, including 41 two year olds for the complete dispersal of prominent breeding and racing Lothenbach Stables, Inc. The catalog can be viewed via the OBS website.

The sale is set for Tuesday March 12th through Thursday March 14th, with all sessions starting at 11:00 a.m. Hips 1 – 284 will sell Tuesday; Hips 285 – 568 on Wednesday and Hips 569 – 853 on Thursday.
