October Yearling Sale begins Tuesday, October 10

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2017 October Yearling Sale begins Tuesday, October 10th. There are 619 yearlings cataloged for the two-day sale, which gets underway at 12:00 noon with the Selected session (Hip No.’s 1 – 188, supplements 189 – 202). The Sale continues with an Open session on Wednesday, October 11th, beginning at 9:00 a.m. There are 445 (Hip No.’s 301 – 730, supplements 731 – 746) horses in the Open session. Catalog pages for the supplements are available via the OBS website at obssales.com and in printed form at the sales grounds.

Conformation photographs of Selected yearlings may be viewed through the Sortable Master Index on the OBS website. The Master Index also includes links to pedigree updates via equineline.com. The sale will be streamed live on the OBS, Blood-Horse and DRF websites. The website now includes a Spanish language section which can be accessed from the home page. The section’s index links to information for consignors and buyers, as well as press releases and important general information.

The OBS Yearling Sale, a perennial source of high class racehorses, has produced winners of graded stakes from coast to coast in North America as well as at Ascot, Dubai and Japan. Twenty five Yearling Sale graduates have surpassed  the million dollar mark in earnings, and recent graduates include Noted and Quoted, winner of Santa Anita’s 2016 Chandelier Stakes (G1), 2017 La Troienne Stakes (G1) winner Big World and Starship Jubilee, who captured this year’s renewals of Woodbine’s Nassau (G2) and Dance Smartly (G2).

Freshly minted millionaire Sharp Azteca, winner of the 2017 Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) and Monmouth Cup Stakes (G3), is Breeders’ Cup-bound, pointing for the Dirt Mile (G1) after a four length victory in Belmont’s Kelso Handicap (G2).

The 2016 OBS Yearling Sale class is off to a strong start, headed by Kaleem Shah’s Best Pal Stakes (G2) winner Run Away, who has also won the Santa Anita Juvenile and Barrett’s Juvenile Stakes. The colt by Run Away and Hide was purchased for $35,000 out of the Bill Murphy consignment.

Craig D. Upham’s Patrona Margarita is also a graded stakes winner, taking the Pocahontas Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs. The daughter of Special Rate was consigned to the sale by Stoneview Farm, Agent.

Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Ellis Park Debutante Stakes winner Kelly’s Humor, by OBS graduate Midnight Lute, was second in the Pocahontas (G2). She was purchased at last year’s yearling sale for $35,000 out of the Stuart Morris Consignment.

Stuart Morris also consigned Tobey L. Morton’s Pacific Gale, winner of the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park. She’s a daughter of OBS graduate Flat Out.

Closer to home, Raroma Stable’s Phantom Ro won at first asking and then came back to take the FTBOA Florida Sire Dr. Fager Stakes at Gulfstream in his second start. The Florida-bred gelding by Wildcat Heir was consigned to the sale by Beth Bayer, Agent.

Starship Stables’ Starship Bonita has amassed earnings of $374,400 with two stakes wins at Gulfstream, taking the FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes after capturing the Florida Sire Susan’s Girl Stakes. The Florida-bred daughter of Gone Astray was sold for $25,000 by The Acorn LLC, Agent at the Selected session.

Anton Kubacak’s Emily’s Lollipop is the seventh stakes winner to date from last year’s sale, with the daughter of Tiz the One taking the Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies at Louisiana Downs. She was consigned by Select Sales, Agent.

Tapit heads the sale’s strong stallion roster, a list including upper echelon sires Awesome Again, Candy Ride (ARG), Distorted Humor, Elusive Quality, Giant’s Causeway, Kantharos, Kitten’s Joy, Macleans Music, Malibu Moon, More Than Ready, Quality Road, Speightstown, Tiznow and Union Rags.

Always considered a showcase for newcomers to the stallion ranks, the sale features the offspring of Fed Biz, Goldencents, He’s Had Enough, Mucho Macho Man, Uncaptured, Verrazano and Will Take Charge.

Promising stallions whose first crop is at the races with yearlings in the sale include Jimmy Creed, Overanalyze, Poseidon’s Warrior, Shanghai Bobby, Treasure Beach (GB) and Violence.
