Sharp Azteca romps to track record in Monmouth Cup Stakes

Gelfenstein Farm’s Sharp Azteca is on verge of a million in earnings after a track record performance in Sunday’s $100,000 Monmouth Cup Stakes (G3). After pressing the pace in the early going, he went after the leader on the far turn, took charge a quarter mile from home and bounded away to a 7-1/2 length victory, running the mile and a sixteenth in a track record 1:40.19. It’s the third graded stakes win for the 4-year-old colt by Freud, trained by Jorge Navarro, now 13-6-4-1 with $956,740 in earnings. A two time OBS graduate, he was sold first by Select Sales at the 2014 August Selected Yearling Sale and then purchased for $220,000 at the 2015 April Sale by Gelfenstein Farm from de Meric Sales, Agent for Golden Legacy Stables, after an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5. watch his under tack video 

Carolyn Wilson’s The Tabulator is two for two and a stakes winner after coming from off the pace and winning the $65,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes by 2-1/2 lengths on Friday night at Prairie Meadows. Consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, to the 2017 OBS March Sale, the 2-year-old colt by Dialed In was purchased for $460,000 after turning in an Under Tack eighth in :10 flat. Anthony J. Russo’s Money Or Love circled wide to reach contention in Saturday’s $50,000 Added Elegance Handicap at Gulfstream and sustained her drive down the stretch, getting up in the final strides to win by a neck. The 5-year-old Florida-bred mare by J Be K, trained by her owner, now sports a 21-6-0-3 career record and earnings of $165,515. The two-time OBS graduate was sold by Darsan, Inc. at the 2013 August Yearling Sale before she was purchased for $8,200 from Jesse Hoppel at the 2014 June Sale after working an eighth in :10 2/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

Teed Off Stable LLC’s Pink Cotton took the lead at the start of Albuquerque’s $50,000 Duke City Sprint Stakes on Friday night and stayed there to the wire, scoring by three quarters of a length. It’s the first stakes win for the 3-year-old Florida-bred son of High Cotton, who sped an Under Tack eighth in :9 4/5 before he was purchased for $85,000 out of the Pick View LLC consignment at the 2016 OBS April Sale. Now 5-3-0-1 for trainer Bart G. Hone, he has earned $66,750 to date. watch his under tack video 

The OBS juvenile class of 2017 was busy at Del Mar over the weekend. On Saturday, trainer Jeff Mullins unveiled Red Baron’s Barn LLC & Rancho Temescal LLC’s Tatters to Riches in a $60,345 six furlong maiden special weight test. The 2-year-old colt by Union Rags dueled head to head for the early lead, took control after straightening away and eased away to a 1-1/4 length victory, earning $36,000 for his effort. Consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, to the 2017 OBS April Sale, he was sold to his current connectons for $1,000,000 after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show.  watch his under tack video 

On Sunday, Reddam Racing LLC’s Encumbered, fourth in his debut on July 3rd behind OBS August Yearling Sale graduate Run Away in the Santa Anita Juvenile Stakes, rallied to reach contention in the stretch of a $60,000 one mile maiden special weight test on the turf course, took the lead nearing the eighth pole and scored by three quarters of a length. The win was worth $36,000 to the 2-year-old colt by Violence, trained by Simon Callaghan, purchased by Paul Reddam out of the Top Line Sales consignment for $225,000 at the 2017 OBS April Sale after turning in an Under Tack Quarter in :20 4/5. watch his under tack video
