American Anthem leads big weekend for OBS at Santa Anita

OBS graduates enjoyed a good weekend at Santa Anita, taking three stakes races.

China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners LLC, SF Racing LLC et al’s American Anthem picked up his first stakes win on Saturday in Santa Anita’s $100,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3), coming  from off the pace, taking command turning for home and easing away to a 1-3/4 length victory. Fellow OBS graduate Aristocratic (March ’16) checked in third. The 3-year-old colt by Bodemeister, trained by Bob Baffert, is now 5-2-1-0 and has earned $114,545. He turned in an Under Tack eighth in :10 1/5 before he was purchased for $435,000 out of the Hoppel’s Horse & Cattle Co. consignment at the 2016 OBS March Sale.   watch his under tack video

Baoma Corporation’s Faypien jumped straight from an April maiden win to Santa Anita’s $78,345 Angels Flight Stakes and was unfazed by the raise In class, rallying to take the lead after turning for home and  holding off fellow a late charge by fellow OBS graduate Noted and Quoted (March ’16, August ’15) to win by half a length. With two wins and a third place finish for trainer Bob Baffert, she has earned $85,680 to date. The 3-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Ghostzapper sped a quarter in :20 2/5 prior to her purchase for $720,000 out of the Off the Hook LLC consignment at the 2016 OBS April Sale.  watch her under tack video

Rockingham Ranch’s Arms Runner is two for two and a stakes winner after closing in the stretch and getting up late to win Saturday’s $79,190 Desert Code Stakes at Santa Anita by a length and a half, with fellow OBS graduate What’sontheagenda (April ’16) settling for third. The 3-year-old Florida-bred son of Overdriven, a half brother to OBS graduate Calculator (April ’14), was sold for $525,000 by breeder Ocala Stud at the 2016 OBS April Sale after breezing a quarter in :21 flat at the Under Tack Show. Mark DeDomenico LLC and North American Thoroughbred Horse Company Inc.’s Dear Lilly scored her second straight stakes victory at Hasting Park on Saturday, taking over on the turn in the $50,000 Vancouver Sun Stakes and going on from there to score by a length and a quarter. The 7-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Graeme Hall was consigned by TDM Sales, Agent to the 2011 OBS August Sale. Trained by Sandi Gann, she’s now 25-14-2-3 and has earned $188,761 to date.

In addition to their big weekend at Santa Anita, OBS graduates turned in big performances overseas.

Michael B. Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith’s Acapulco captured the Sole Power Sprint Stakes at The Curragh on Sunday, taking command a furlong from home and scoring by half a length. It’s the third stakes win for the 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy, currently in foal to Galileo (IRE), who took Ascot’s Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at two for trainer Wesley Ward. Now trained by Aidan O’Brien, her career record stands at 7-4-1-1 and she has earned $282,328 to date. Consigned by McKathan Bros., Agent, to the 2015 OBS March Sale, she went to M. V. Magnier for $750,000 after breezing an Under Tack eighth in :9 3/5, the sale’s co-fastest at the distance. watch her under tack video

On Sunday at Kranji Racecourse in Singapore, Wong Chi Tat’s Forever Young was a 13-1 upset winner of the $354,309 Singapore Guineas, taking the lead at the start and leading all the way to a three quarter length victory. It’s the first stakes score for the 3-year-old gelding by Run Away and Hide, consigned by Whitman Sales LLC, Agent, to the 2016 OBS March Sale where he turned in a quarter in :21 flat at the Under Tack Show. Trained by Cheng Tee Kuah, he’s now 6-3-0-1 and has earned $392,398 to date. watch his under tack video
