Academic beats the boys in the British Columbia Derby

Bear Stables and Riversedge Racing Stables’ Academic,  who defeated colts last month in the Canadian Derby (G3) last month, did it again on Sunday in the $250,000 British Columbia Derby (G3) at Hastings Racecourse, rallying from off the pace and getting up in the shadow of the wire to win by a neck. Trained by Tim Rycroft, The 3-year-old Henny Hughes filly is now 8-4-1-0 with $488,764 in earnings. She was sold for $54,000 by Flying Fish, Agent, at the 2014 OBS April Sale after working a quarter in :22 flat at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video

H. Jack Hendricks and Roger Justice’s East Hall continued his march toward the million dollar mark in the $75,000 Sensitive Prince Stakes at Gulfstream on Saturday, rallying from off the pace, taking command in the upper stretch and easing away to a 1-3/4 length victory over fellow OBS graduate Lynx (April ’13). It’s the fourth stakes win for 4-year-old Florida-bred gelding by Graeme Hall, trained by Bill Kaplan, now 27-6-4-4 with earnings of $867,665. The winner of the Ohio Derby and Indiana Derby (G2) is a two time OBS graduate. He was sold by Summerfield, Agent, at the 2012 August Sale and then worked an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5 before being purchased by trainer Bill Kaplan for $55,000 on behalf of Hendricks and Justice out of the Southern Chase Farm, Inc. (Greg and Karen Dodd) consignment at the 2013 April Sale. watch his under tack video

Matthew Schera’s Cage Fighter picked up his first stakes win on Saturday, taking over in the stretch of the $194,000 PTHA President’s Cup Stakes and scoring by a length and three quarters. A 5-year-old graded stakes placed Florida-bred son of Closing Argument, he sped an Under Tack quarter in :21 3/5 before being sold by Craig Wheeler, Agent for $50,000 at the 2012 OBS June Sale. Trained by James L. Lawrence II, his second win in five starts this year leaves him 15-6-4-2 with $348,471 in earnings. watch his under tack video

Lynne Martin-Boutte’s Formal Summation took the lead at the start of Saturday’s $75,000 Laurel Futurity and never looked back, opening up a long lead in the stretch and coasting home a 2-3/4 length winner. That’s two wins in three starts for the 2-year-old Florida-bred colt by In Summation, sold first at the 2014 OBS Winter Mixed Sale before being purchased for $6,200 out of the Sue Vacek consignment at the 2014 OBS August Yearling Sale. Trained by Kathleen O’Connell, he’s now 3-2-0-0 and has earned $72,400.

Luke Allen, Ed J. Bloom, Jerry Hollendorfer and Jose Singer’s Dr. Fager’s Gal tried stakes company for the first time in last Thursday’s $75,000 Beverly J. Lewis Stakes at Los Alamitos. The 3-year-old filly by Wild Desert tracked the early leader, took over in the final furlong and drew off to a 3-3/4 length victory. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, she’s now 7-3-1-1 and has earned $150,380. She was purchased for $85,000 out of the Cutting Edge Equine consignment by Christina Jelm, Agent, at the 2014 OBS April Sale after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack Show. watch her under tack video
