Spring Sale begins Monday

As last year’s Spring Sale graduate Dance With Fate heads to the Kentucky Derby (G1), the 2014 OBS Spring Sale of Two Year Olds in Training begins a four day run on Monday, April 21st. Hip No.’s 1-302 will sell on Monday, Hip No.’s 303-604 sell on Tuesday, Hip No.’s 605-906 sell Wednesday and Hip No.’s 907-1209 on Thursday. All four sessions begin at 10:30 a.m.

Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stables, Ciaglia Racing LLC’s Dance With Fate is looking to follow in the footsteps of 2011 Spring graduate I’ll Have Another, who went on to win the 2012 Derby and Preakness Stakes (G1). Dance With Fate punched his ticket the Derby with a convincing victory in the recent $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. The Florida-bred colt by Two Step Salsa was purchased by Joseph Ciaglia, Jr. for $120,000 out of the Best A Luck Farm consignment.

Other Spring Sale graduates in the headlines recently include catalog cover girl Fashion Plate, who added the recent Santa Anita Oaks (G1) to her earlier victory in Santa Anita’s Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) in February. Racing for Arnold Zetcher LLC & Michael Tabor, the daughter of Old Fashioned was purchased by trainer Simon Callaghan for $340,000 out of the de Meric Sales consignment in 2013.

In all, Spring Sale graduates have long been a major force at North American racetracks, with 21 horses topping the million dollar mark in earnings and eight graduates earning Eclipse Awards.

At the Under Tack Show, Hip No. 1207, a son of Wildcat Heir consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, the Sale’s fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :9 3/5. The bay colt is out of Exquisite Beauty, by Bertrando, from the family of grade one winner Idiot Proof. 

Two horses shared honors for the sale’s fastest quarter, each working in :20 3/5. Hip No. 798 is a son of Harlan’s Holiday consigned by Northwest Stud. The bay colt is out of Triumphantly, by Mr. Greeley, a half sister to stakes placed Touch of Splendor. Hip No. 1187 is a son of Speightstown consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent for Stonestreet Stables.

The chestnut colt, out of Emptythetill by Holy Bull, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Conveyance.

Hip No. 511, a daughter of Tale of Ekati consigned by All Dreams Equine, Agent, worked the sale’s fastest three eighths, breezing the distance in :33 flat. The bay filly is out of Rainbow Girl, by Conquistador Cielo, a half sister to stakes winner Mighty Martha.

They are also available for viewing in the video room adjacent to the Horsemen’s Lounge in the sales pavilion as well as several kiosks in the lobby and the covered walking ring.
